1857-O $2.50 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-58. As the San Francisco Mint developed its coining production, California mined gold tended to remain on the west coast. The result was a diminished supply in New Orleans. Only 34,000 quarter eagles were coined at the New Orleans Mint in 1857, and survivors are elusive. (PCGS Pop. 31 in AU-58, only 23 graded higher and a total of 140 in all grades, 9/26/11).
