Lot 1034

1871-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded EF-40. The 1871-CC Liberty eagle was minted in extremely limited quantities during the second year of operation of the famous Carson City Mint. The official mintage was a mere 8,085 pieces. All Carson City eagles from the 1870s are elusive, so the 1871-CC does not stand out in the context of the series, but the date is very scarce in absolute terms. Doug Winter estimates a surviving population of 90-100 pieces in all grades, with about 30 examples extant at the XF level. (PCGS Pop. 14 in EF-40, only 33 graded higher, the highest grade being a single MS-62 and the next highest a single AU-58 example. Total of 68 in all grades, 9/24/11).
Estimate $5,000 - 7,500.

Lot 1036

1871-S $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-53. The small mintage of 16,500 pieces is only part of the explanation for the rarity of the 1871-S Liberty Head eagle. This issue also had a high rate of attrition, and examples in AU53 condition are quite rare. The surviving population is estimated at 80 to 100 examples. (PCGS Pop. 3 in AU-53, only 6 graded higher, the highest grade is a single AU-55+ and the next highest being five AU-55 examples. Total of 60 in all grades, 9/24/11).
Estimate $2,000 - 3,000.

Lot 1038

1872-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-50. The 1872-CC is one of the rarest Carson City eagles, both in absolute terms and from the standpoint of condition rarity. The original mintage was reported as 4,600 pieces, and only 75-90 coins are believed known in all grades, the finest of which appears to be a pair of AU58s. (PCGS Pop. 6 in AU-50, only 5 graded higher, the highest grade is two AU-58 examples. Total of 52 in all grades, 9/24/11).
Estimate $10,000 - 15,000.

Lot 1040

1873 $10 Liberty. PCGS graded EF-45+. One of several Philadelphia Mint issues from the 1870s with extremely low mintages, a scant 800 business strikes left the dies, in addition to a mere 25 proofs. The surviving population is estimated at 30 to 35 examples. (PCGS Pop. 1 in EF-45+, only 8 graded higher, the highest grade is a single MS-60 example. Total of 16 in all grades, 9/24/11).
Estimate $7,500 - 10,000.

Lot 1041

1873-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded EF-40. Mintage of ten dollar gold coins at the Carson City Mint in 1873 was extremely limited, with only 4,543 pieces produced. The entire mintage was released at the time of issue and circulated heavily in the regional economy with the surviving population estimated at perhaps 60-80 examples in all grades. No Mint State specimens of this elusive date are known to collectors today. In Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint, author Doug Winter has this to say regarding availability of the 1873-CC:

"The 1873-CC eagle is a rare coin in all grades. Most show considerable wear and any that grades Extremely Fine-40 represents unusual quality. There are probably no more than a half dozen known in About Uncirculated and no 1873-CC eagle is currently known or rumored in any Mint State grade.". (PCGS Pop. 8 in EF-40, only 27 graded higher, the highest grade is a single AU-55 example. Total of 52 in all grades, 9/24/11).
Estimate $7,500 - 10,000.
