$10 Liberty Head/With Motto (1876 - 1881)

Lots 1047-1056 Lots 1057-1066 Lots 1067-1072

Lot 1047

1876 $10 Liberty. PCGS graded AU-53. As Garrett and Guth put it in their Encyclopedia of U.S. Gold Coins, "Although the low-mintage 1875 eagle was a tough act to follow, the 1876 issue came in with its own tiny mintage of only 687 pieces." While the 1875 date has become legendary for its production of just 100 coins, the 1876 remains underrated, a treasure to be discovered by the discerning collector.

The surviving population is estimated at 40 to 50 examples. (PCGS Pop. 5 in AU-53, only 5 graded higher, the highest grade is a single MS-60 example. Total of 34 in all grades, 9/24/11).
Estimate $7,500 - 10,000.

Realized: $37,500

Lot 1049

1876-CC $10 Liberty. PCGS graded EF-40. With a tiny mintage of only 4,696 pieces and the significant local demand for official hard money, it is little wonder that the 1876-CC ten is seldom found above the VF grade level. (PCGS Pop. 15 in EF-40, only 42 graded higher, the highest grade is three AU-58 examples. Total of 91 in all grades, 9/24/11).
Estimate $4,000 - 6,000.

Lot 1050

1876-S $10 Liberty. PCGS graded VF-35. All three mints then in operation struck Eagles in 1876, but only in very small quantities. The combined production of the denomination at Philadelphia, Carson City, and San Francisco barely exceeded 10,000 pieces. About half of these coins were from San Francisco, but the mintage of 5,000 pieces was not saved, and not a single example has been certified in Mint State by either NGC or PCGS.

The surviving population is estimated at 80 to 100 examples. (PCGS Pop. 8 in VF-35, only 43 graded higher, the highest grade is four AU-53 examples. Total of 58 in all grades, 9/24/11).
Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.
