Lot 2417

Great Britain, 1903-14, The Mather correspondence, group of about 40 covers and cards, much of which pertains to Edwardian politics and in particular to the early days of the Labour Party; the correspondence is mainly from Albert E. Allen, secretary of the Leeds & County Fabian Society to Frederick M. Mather of the National Amalgamated Union of Shop Assistants, Warehousemen & Clerks; Allen was apparently a very talented cartoonist and his illustrations, as well as his letters are full of political satire on such topics as the Boer War, Women's suffrage and the importation of Chinese labor; in all there are 11 illustrated covers (9 of which contain letters) and 4 illustrated postcards from the 1903-1914 period, as well as numerous "decorated" postcards, a few Allen letters without envelopes (including two written on the back of Independent Labour Party broadsides) and miscellaneous materials from this friendly correspondence; also includes a 1935 typed letter signed by Philip Snowden, later Viscount Snowden, a friend of the Mather family, who was national chairman of the I.L.P. between 1903 and 1906 and was later Chancellor of the Exchequer; condition of some of the covers is a bit rough around the edges due to the rather thick contents, but all-in-all an intriguing and entertaining look into British political issues at the turn of the 19th century.
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

Lot 2418 ()

Great Britain, 1891-92, The Sargent correspondence, group of 24 illustrated cover fronts, all about 4½" x 3½", addressed to a Miss Sargent in Bristol; nine are pen & ink, the rest watercolor including some quite elaborate and primarily quite skillfully done. Sargent.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Lot 2419

Great Britain, 1902-11, The Sheppard-Bingham correspondence, group of 22 cover and 8 postcards, all illustrated by one Edward (Teddy) Bingham, a British sailor, and sent to his girlfriend, Mabel Sheppard, who, sometime in 1908, apparently became Mrs. T. Bingham; the illustrations feature a wide variety of comic scenes, most with dialogue, a few on ships' stationery (HMS Essex and Africa); the first cover, dated Jan of 1902 bears a 1d lilac, the rest are franked with various Edwardian singles and are cancelled at numerous different British ports, a Fine and amusing group.

Lot 2420

Great Britain, 1908-13, The Daisy Theakston correspondence, A superb collection of 54 small hand-drawn and hand-painted covers measuring about 4¾" x 3¾". They were all mailed to one "Daisy Theakston" in Essex, and possibly were all illustrated by the same artist (a number have the artist's initials "SS"). Their subject matter includes a wide array of themes, ranging from landscapes to motor-bikes and speed boats. All have previously been mounted in an album with glue so their backs are stained and/or scuffed to varying degrees, but all are complete envelopes. 40 have the stamp, address and postmark on the front with the illustration; the other 14 have them on the reverse so that the address and stamps have suffered somewhat, but in only one case has the stamp been lost. This is one of the largest single pictorial correspondences to have survived and is quite impressive to behold.
Estimate    $4,000 - 6,000.
