Official Seal - Sea Post, 1895, black, four seals used to repair circa 1899 cover from Germany to Chicago Ill. bearing Germany 10kr blue, handstamped "T." for tax due, Postage Due 10¢ carmine (J35) pair tied by New York "Due 20" duplex, faults, Fine, One of only two recorded examples of this Sea Post Office seal recorded on cover.

Lot 325    

Official Seal - Typeset, black, rouletted 12½ x 11½, Setting 2, Position A, affixed to seal right edge of 1904 cover bearing 2¢ carmine (301) tied by "Lincoln Jan 18 1904" duplex to Stevens Pa., misdirected to Ephrata Pa., opened in error and then forwarded to correct address and delivered the same day, Very Fine and choice use.

Lot 326    

Official Seal - Typeset, black, rouletted 16½, setting 4, used in combination with 1888 Government Typograph Seal (Setting 6, OX7), which has the scarce Type F plate flaw, 2¢ 1895 Issue on cover to Providence R.I. with "Ranger Ind. Mar 31" cds, reverse with "Don Juan Ind Mar 31 1900" cds, Providence machine receiving postmark ties typeset seal, few typical flaws as usual, Very Fine, This is the only recorded cover combining the typeset and government seals. One of the most important post office seal covers., ex-Richardson.

The typeset seal was applied by either the Ranger or Don Juan post offices, both of which were fourth class offices. Like other fourth-class post offices they did not have access to the government seals and had to purchase typeset seals from private vendors. Upon arrival at the first-class Providence post office on April 2, which did have access to the Government Printing Office produced seals, the 1888 seal was affixed.

In addition to being the only known cover with both types of seals, this is also the only known on-cover example of the scarce Type F plate flaw of the 1888 Issue.

Official Seal - Typeset, black, rouletted balance, mounted balance comprising LOX11 mint pair printed on gum side (only recorded example), LOX11 and LOX11c (2) used singles cancelled by postmarks, LOX11 partial double impression, tête-bêche panes of four of Nos. LOX11 and LOX11c, two LOX11d singles, LOX11h used on small piece (only recorded used type 7 or 8), and two mint LOX11i singles, F.-V.F. overall.

Official Seal - Typeset, black, affixed over right edge of 1916 cover to reseal after being reduced from opening in error, bearing two 1¢ green (397) singles tied by "San Jose, Cal. Dec 13 1916" waving flag machine cancellation, addressed to Plymouth Cal.; seal torn and reduced from opening, Very Fine, the only recorded on-cover use; with 2000 P.F. certificate.

The cloister black typeface used for the first line of text is from American Type Founders. It was introduced in 1906. The typeface used for the second line was first available from the Keystone Foundry in 1913 and consistent with this use.
