Hawaii, Hilo, Hawaii, Sept 14, 1843, dateline on lengthy 3½ page letter from D.B. Lyman to Newton Falls, Ohio, entered the U.S. mails after almost 7 months with indistinct red entry cds, partial matching "Ship" handstamp and "27" rate, letter with important political content regarding British control and independence of the islands in part…In July or Aug 1842 commissioners were sent by the Hawaiian government to meet with the governments of the U.S. & of the principle powers of Europe with a view to secure the independence of the Islands. Soon after, the British Consul left secretly for England, leaving his deputy, a sworn enemy to this Govtabout the middle of Feby 1843 H.B.M. Ship Carysfort R't Hon. Lord George Paulet arrived & after some strange movements, quite in the style of the British Consul who had left, made such demands & enforced them in such a manner that the King & his executive consul thought it best to surrender all provisionallyThe 6th of July, the U.S. Frigate Constellation arrived. The commander Commodore Kearny protested against the cession of the Islands to the British crown, announcing his determination to hold Kamehameha III & Lord George Paulet responsible for all that American interests might suffer in consequence of it. He also raised the Hawaiian flag & saluted the native authorities under it when they visited him on board his ship; some splitting along folds, otherwise Very Fine, a wonderful letter Detailing the Events of Provisional Cession and the Occupational Government Formed By Lord George Paulet While Attempting To Annex Hawaii To the United Kingdom.

Hawaii, Honolulu, Sandwich Islands, August 2nd, 1850, dateline on folded letter to Gateshead, England, entered the English mails with "26 No, 1850" cds and manuscript "2" rate, receiving backstamp, letter from Maj. Gen. Thomas Bernard to his father, with interesting content regarding his expedition from Hobart and Tahiti and Hawaiian celebration…I came in time here for the grand festival in celebration of the restoration of the Independent Flag of these islands. In 1843 Capt. Lord Paulett, being misled by the then B. Consul was induced to take possession of the islands for Great Britain., mentions attending the celebration with the King and Queen, etc., Very Fine.

Hawaii, Honolulu, Hawaiian Islands, Nov 5, red cds (MH 236.11) on buff cover to New Bedford, Mass., "San Francisco, Cal., Nov 28" cds with matching straight line "Ship" and "12" rate handstamps (10¢ postage + 2¢ ship fee), manuscript "Honolulu, Novm 5/53, Bill of Lading Whale Bone from ship Hunter" docketing on front, Very Fine and choice, an attractive ship letter usage originating on the New Bedford whaling ship Hunter.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

This cover was carried on the steamer Winfield Scott that left San Francisco on December 1st and wrecked in the Santa Barbara channel. The mail pouches where eventually recovered.

Hawaii, Honolulu, H.I., Paid All, Mar 27, 1881, clear red cds (MH 235.32) on cover to Berkeley, Cal., franked with 1871, 6¢ bluish green tied by segmented target handstamp; cover reduced at left and stamp with margin nicks at right, otherwise Very Fine, a scarce postmark known used between March 15th and December 19th of 1881.
