Transatlantic Mail from Belgium

Lot 168    

1846 (Apr. 2) Leige, Belgium to New Orleans, La., folded cover with red Liege (4.2) cds and manuscript "24" prepaid rating on back, red "PD" framed handstamps and manuscript "1/8" 1s8d credit to G.B., red London Paid (4.4) and black Liverpool (4.4) transits, carried by Cunard Line Caledonia from Liverpool Apr. 4 to Boston arriving Apr. 20, New Orleans large blue "12" due h.s., F.-V.F.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The 24 decimes prepayment included 4 decimes Belgium internal, 8 decimes British and 12 decimes transatlantic fees, of which 20 decimes or 1s8d was owed to G.B. Letter not rated at arrival port of Boston, but in New Orleans where large blue "12" was applied for the postage due (2¢ ship plus 10¢ U.S. inland fees).

1847 (Dec. 16) Antwerp, Belgium to Boston, Mass., folded letter with Antwerp (12.16) cds with manuscript "15" centimes prepaid to Havre, Havre (12.22) backstamp, carried by Hérout & de Handel Line Missouri Havre Dec. 23 to New York arriving Jan. 18, red "New-York 'Ship 7cts' Jan 18" cds for 5¢ inland postage plus 2¢ ship fee, Very Fine, this is the only Hérout and de Handel Line cover recorded from Belgium to U.S. This was carried on last voyage of the line to New York.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter posted at Antwerp by forwarding agents, Brothers Nottebohm. Prepayment included 5 decimes to Belgium and 10 decimes to France.

(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Nov. 1) Antwerp, Belgium to Castine, Me., folded letter written at quarantine grounds near Antwerp by sailing ship captain who crossed the Atlantic through a hurricane and arrived at Antwerp, it was carried privately to London and posted with "Fenchurch St" straightline postmark, red London "Paid, 10 NO 1848" transit and red manuscript "1/-" shilling prepaid packet rating, carried by Cunard Line Cambria from Liverpool Nov. 11 to New York arriving Nov. 25, red "New York 'Ship 34cts Nov 25" entry cds for 10¢ inland postage plus 24¢ packet fee, Very Fine and interesting retaliatory rate cover from Belgium.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Letter carried on the 21st of 25 Cunard mail west bound voyages to the U.S. under the retaliatory order.

(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Nov. 14) Antwerp, Belgium to Castine, Me., folded letter with red "Anvers 14 Nov" origin cds and manuscript "24" décimes prepaid rating on reverse for all transit fees, manuscript "1/8" 1s8d Belgian credit to G.B., London and Liverpool (11.17) transits, carried by Britannia from Liverpool Nov 18 to Boston arriving Dec. 6, red "Boston Ms. 'Ship' Dec 6" cds and matching "29" retaliatory rate h.s. for 5¢ inland plus 24¢ packet fee, Very Fine.

Letter carried on the 22nd of 25 Cunard mail voyages to the U.S. under the retaliatory order.

1854 (Jul. 9) Antwerp, Belgium, to Washington, D.C., cover with "Anvers 9 Juil 1854" double circle date stamp and with matching "PD" framed handstamp and manuscript 14 decimes prepaid rating on reverse, manuscript "1/" shilling Belgian credit to G.B., London Paid (7.10) transit and red manuscript "16" cent credit to U.S., carried by Collins Line Pacific from Liverpool Jul. 12 to New York arriving Jul. 24, red "N.York 'Paid 30' Jul 24" exchange cds updated to black "N. York Am. Pkt. '5' Jul 24" exchange due cds, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Prepayment (manuscript on reverse) included 2 decimes Belgium internal, 4 decimes British and 8 decimes transatlantic fees, of which 12 decimes or 1 shilling was owed to G.B. under Anglo-Belgium Treaty of 1849. Since transatlantic transit was by an American packet, G.B. credited 8 pence or 16¢ to the U.S. New York marked letter for 5¢ postage due, the U.S. portion of the U.S.-G.B. treaty rate which remained unpaid.

1865 (May 9) Liege, Belgium to New York, N.Y., folded letter bearing Belgium 1863, 20c. and 40c. (2), tied by "217" dotted diamonds, Liege (5.9) origin cds, French (5.9) entry cds with framed "PD" h.s. and manuscript "3" cent credit to U.S., carried by Cunard Line China that departed Queenstown May 14th to Boston arriving May 26th, red "N. York Br. Pkt. Paid May 27" exchange cds, Very Fine, a lovely Transatlantic cover in choice condition.
