Transatlantic Mail to and from Cuba

Lot 179    

1842 (Jun. 1) Havana, Cuba to London, England via Boston, folded letter carried out of mails from Cuba to Boston where scarce "Forwarded by Harndens Express from Boston" circular handstamp struck, carried by Cunard Line Acadia from Boston Jun. 1 to Liverpool arriving Jun. 14, red London (6.14) backstamp and manuscript"1" shilling rating for single packet rate, Very Fine and scarce.

Lot 180    

1850 (May 18) Havana, Cuba to Paris, France via New York, folded letter with manuscript "Forwarded by F. Echarte, May 18th 1850" flap endorsement, red "New York May 18" exchange cds, carried by Tod & McGregor City of Glasgow from New York May 18 to Glasgow arriving June 2, handstamped two line "Greenock/Ship Letter" and green Greenock (6.2) backstamp, red London (6.3) backstamp and matching "Colonies/&cleaned.Art.13" framed h.s., Calais (6.4) entry cds with manuscript "30" decimes due rating, some minor aging spots, F.-V.F., This is the maiden return voyage of only 4 round voyages for Tod & McGregor, this is the only recorded cover by this steamship under original owners. A scarce non-contract steamship voyage.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

The "City of Glasgow" was the first iron screw steamship to operate on the Atlantic. She made five voyages on the Glasgow - New York service on Tod & McGregor's own account and sailed on her maiden voyage on April 15, 1850.

Lot 181    

1854 (Mar. 8) Havana, Cuba to Paris, France via New York, folded letter carried privately to New York, blue "Lille & Rasines" forwarding agent cachet, red "New York Am. Packet. Mar 14" exchange cds, carried by Havre Line Nashville from New York Mar. 14 to Havre arriving Mar. 28, red "Outre-Mer Le Havre" (3.28) entry cds and Paris (3.28) arrival backstamp, ms. "6" decimes due rating, Very Fine.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

The steamer "Nashville" was chartered for only two round voyages after the loss of "Humboldt" that was wrecked on the Sisters Rocks in dense fog on Dec. 6th. This letter was carried on the second voyage.

Lot 182    

1856 (Oct. 28) Havana, Cuba to Bordeaux, France, blue folded letter with New York "Not Paid" framed h.s., carried by Union Line Bavaria from New York Nov. 11 to Cherbourg arriving Dec.4, red Cherbourg (12.4) entry cds with manuscript "12" decimes due rating, Bordeaux (12.5) arrival backstamp, file fold, F.-V.F., Unusual transatlantic letter by ship in 1856.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Letter carried from Havana to New York by Livingston, Cochran & Co. steamship Cahawba. Apparently New York agent dropped letter in lamp post box with no payment of British open mail rate of 5¢, so New York postmaster had to send it by sailing ship to France. New York marked boxed NOT PAID. Cherbourg clerk marked letter weight of 9 grams and 12 decimes postage due (2 x 6 decimes incoming ship letter rate to a location beyond the arrival port).

1860 (Feb. 17) Hamburg to Havana, Cuba, folded cover with Hamburg origin d.s., Bremen (2.18) backstamp with framed "Paid" h.s. and "15." grote h.s., carried by NGL Line New York from Bremerhaven Feb. 19 to New York arriving Mar. 11, red "N. York Brem. Pkt. Mar 11" exchange transit, Havana (3.18) backstamp with boxed "NA" and "4" reales due h.s., light toning, Fine, Scarce cover from Germany to Cuba via the U.S. by Bremen Treaty mail.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Prepayment of 12 schillinge included 15¢ fee from Hamburg to New York via Bremen plus 5¢ additional fee for U.S. transit to Cuba. Pencil notation of 6¾ silbergroschen in upper right was statement of foreign postage in North German currency. U.S. mail steamer "Cahawba" carried letter from New York to Havana. Boxed "NE" marked in Havana to show origin of letter, "Norte Europa" or Northern Europe.

Lot 184    

1861 (Mar. 5) Havana, Cuba to Amsterdam, Holland, folded letter carried by U.S. Mail Line "Quaker City" from Havana to N.Y., "New-York Br. Pkt. Mar 13" backstamp and "20" cent double-weight debit to France, carried by Adriatic under charter for Cunard leaving New York Mar. 13 to Queenstown arriving Mar. 23, Havre (3.26) entry cds, red Amsterdam (3.28) backstamp with manuscript "150" Dutch cents, Very Fine, This was the only voyage that the "Adriatic" made under charter for the Cunard Line.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The "Adriatic" was newly purchased for the Atlantic Royal Mail Steam Navigation Company (Galway Line) and was chartered by the Cunard Line to carry mails to England on this voyage only as she proceeded to England to join her new company. This was due to the Australasian breaking down on her Feb. 16 eastbound voyage.

1861 (Dec. 5) Havana, Cuba to Locle, Switzerland via New York, blue folded cover with blue Havana merchant oval, "New York Am. Pkt. Dec 5" exchange backstamp and matching black "32" cent debit rating h.s., carried by Hapag Line Bavaria from New York Sep. 14 to Southampton arriving Dec. 29, red Calais (12.30) transit, Locle (12.31) arrival backstamp and large magenta "230" rappen due rating, Very Fine, Scarce example of French Treaty mails from Caribbean to destination beyond France.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Letter, sent unpaid in the French mails, carried from Havana to New York by Spofford & Tileston Company steamship Columbia. New York marked 2x16¢=32¢ debit to France for ¼-½ ounce letter (2x10¢ transit from Caribbean plus 2x6¢ transatlantic fees). Swiss marked letter for 230 rappen postage due, double rate letter from the U.S. by French Treaty.

1861 (Dec. 11) Havana, Cuba to London via Old Point Comfort, Va., folded cover with Old Point Comfort (12.16) cds and "Due" circular h.s. with manuscript "48" due rating, "N. York Br. Pkt. '10' Dec 19" exchange cds, carried by Cunard Line Africa from New York Dec. 20 to Queenstown arriving Jan. 1, London (1.2) backstamp with manuscript "2/-" shilling due rating, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter carried privately from Havana, Cuba to Old Point Comfort, Virginia on board the U.S. Government charter steamship Constitution, which had called at Havana for coals on the return from a troop carrying voyage to Ship Island. Letter entered U.S. mails at Old Point Comfort as an unpaid, double rate letter to England. Unusual routing and very uncommon use of the circle due marking of Old Point Comfort. (See Chronicle 150:132-136.).

1867 (Dec. 28) Havana, Cuba to Christiansund, Norway via New York, blue folded cover docketed from Havana, carried by Atlantic Mail S.S. Co. "Morro Castle" to New York, "New York Br. Transit Jan 4" cds and matching large black "7" cent debit to NGU for transit fees from Cuba to U.S., carried by Inman Line City of London from New York Jan. 4 to Queenstown arriving Jan. 13, Verviers (1.15) backstamp, various manuscript and crayon ratings, Christiansund arrival backstamp; small internal tear and hor. fold, F.-V.F., Uncommon letter routing from Cuba through the U.S. to Norway by North German Union mails.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Letter sent in closed mail bag through England and Belgium to Aachen. Prussia marked 10 2/3 silbergroschen debit to Norway-Sweden post office. In addition, 8¢ sgr. unpaid transit via Lubeck and Sweden to Norway was added for a total postage due of 19 1/6 sgr or 51 skilling in Norway.

1870 (Dec. 10) Havana, Cuba to Christiansund, Norway via New York, folded cover with company origin h.s., black "New York Dec 21" transit cds with large black "7" debit h.s. to North Germany Union, carried by Guion Line Idaho from New York Dec. 21 to Queenstown arriving Jan. 1, Norwegian red crayon "35" skilling due rating, Very Fine, uncommon letter routing from Cuba through the U.S. to Norway by North German Union mails.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter carried to New York by Atlantic Mail Steamship Co. steamer "Columbia". New York debited NGU 7¢ for transit fees from Cuba to New York. Letter sent in closed mail bag through England and Belgium to Aachen. Prussia marked 10 silbergroschen debit to Norway-Sweden post office for transit fees owed Prussia. Norway marked letter for 33 skilling then corrected to 35 skilling.
