Surgeon George Clymer, U.S.S. Jamestown, noted on the reverse that the 10-page letter, dated 21 & 22 May 1856 from his wife was received on his ship at Funchal at "9½ A.M. Monday June 16th, Per the Avon from Southampton." Letter carried to Funchal on the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. steamship "Avon" en route to the Caribbean from Southampton. Portuguese marked 160 reis postage due.

Pkt." exchange cds with "1.30" due rating, Very Fine and scarce origin. Estimate $300 - 400.
Letter was carried from Funchal to Southampton on the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. steamship "Tamar" returning from the Caribbean to England. New York added 2 x 21¢ = 42¢ U.S. share to the 88¢ and marked $1.30 postage due. Envelope contained an 18-page letter from Surgeon George Clymer, U.S.S. Jamestown, flagship of the African Squadron, to his wife care of Commodore Shubrick in Washington, D.C.
