Transatlantic Mail to and from Scandinavia

Lot 558    

1852 (Jul. 2) New York, N.Y. to Trondhjem, Norway, folded letter with "New York '20' Jul 10" exchange debit cds, carried by Collins Line Pacific from New York Jul. 10 to Liverpool arriving Jul. 21, Hamburg (7.27) backstamp, red crayon "9" updated to "15"; hor. fold, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Bremen sent letter to Hamburg with no markings except debit to Hamburg of 11 sgr. (9 sgr. plus 2 sgr.). Hamburg stadtpost restated debit as 15 schillinge and turned letter over to Royal Danish Post Office in Hamburg. Postage due in Norway was 30 sk.sp. to Hamburg, 8 sk.sp. to Denmark, 6 sk.sp. for sea postage to Norway, and 5 sk.sp. Norwegian internal postage.

1854 (Mar. 26) New Orleans, La. to Christiania, Norway, blue folded letter with red "New Orleans La. Mar 26" cds with matching "Paid 5" rate h.s., "N. York Br. Pkt. '23' Apr 5" exchange debit cds, carried by Cunard Line Africa from New York Apr. 5 to Liverpool arriving Apr. 18, Aachen (4.19) backstamp with blue manuscript "13" debit, Hamburg (4.20) backstamp with red crayon "17½" debit, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter intended to be sent in British open mail, but New York exchange office sent it as an unpaid letter in Prussian closed mail to Aachen, then to Hamburg where it was turned over to the Danish post office in Hamburg. Prussia debited Hamburg 13 silbergroschen due Prussia. Hamburg converted this debit to 17½ Lubeck schillinge (equivalent to 35 sk.Special Printing. Norwegian currency). Norwegians added 7 sk.Special Printing for transit to Denmark, 6 sk.Special Printing. for sea postage to Norway, and 6 sk.Special Printing. Norwegian inland postage. Total postage due was marked on reverse, 54 sk.Special Printing. Although New Orleans sender addressed letter to Sweden, it was correctly sent to Norway.

1858 (Jun. 18) Quebec, Lower Canada to Tönsberg, Norway, folded letter with "Quebec L.C. Jun 19 1858" origin d.s., carried by Allan Line Indian from Quebec Jun. 19 to Liverpool arriving Jun. 30, various manuscript ratings, London (7.1) and Hamburg (7.3) backstamps, Very Fine, a scarce cover from Canada to Norway.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Although letter unpaid, fully paid rate of 1s10d sterling shown in upper right, crossed through as not relevant. Letter exchanged in Anglo-Prussian treaty mails. Prussia sent letter to Hamburg where it was transferred to the Royal Danish post office in Hamburg for transit to Norway via Danish postal system. Norwegian postage due marked in manuscript on reverse.

1858 (Sep. 14) Havana, Cuba to Trondhjem, Norway via New York, folded letter with New York "Steamship 10" due rating and "28" cent debit to Prussia, carried by Cunard Line Asia from New York Sep. 22 to Liverpool arriving Oct. 2, various ratings including Norwegian manuscript "57" skilling due on reverse, Very Fine, rare Prussian closed mail letter from Cuba via New York to Norway.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter carried by Livingston, Cochran & Co. steamer "Black Warrior" from Havana to New York. New York debit to Prussia included 5¢ transit fee from Cuba plus 23¢ for U.S. fee under convention. Aachen debited Hamburg Stadtpost 15¼ silbergroschen. Hamburg debited Royal Danish post office in Hamburg 20½ schillinge.

1859 (Jul. 20) Philadelphia, Pa. to Grimstad, Norway, folded letter with red "Phila. Am. Pkt. 'Paid' Jul 22" exchange cds with matching circular "Paid" h.s. with red manuscript "33" cent rating, carried by Havre Line Arago from New York July 23 to Southampton arriving Aug. 4, London (4.4) transit and red manuscript "1" shilling credit to Prussia, Hamburg (8.8) backstamp with "Franco" straightline and red crayon "6" sgr. credit, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter placed in the British mail bag at Philadelphia exchange office by mistake and not in French mail bag, so it was put off at Southampton. London sent letter to Norway via Hamburg in U.K.-Prussian convention, crediting 1 shilling to Prussia. Hamburg showed that 6 sgr. transit fees beyond Hamburg were paid. Unusual transit resulting from postal error at Philadelphia.

1862 (Oct. 20) New York to Helsingør, Denmark, blue folded letter with "N. York Brem. Pk. '3' Oct 25" exchange debit cds, carried by NGL Line Hansa from New York Oct. 25 to Bremerhaven arriving Nov. 9, Hamburg (11.10) backstamp with blue "6½" debit h.s., Helsingør arrival backstamp and red crayon "37" due rating; file folds, Fine, uncommon letter to Denmark by Bremen mail.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

Letter forwarded by New York agent Funch, Meinke & Wendt, whose marking is in blue, lower left. Hamburg marked 4½ sgr. unpaid international fee and 6½ sgr. debit to Royal Danish post office in Hamburg, which was equivalent to 28 sk.R.M. To this was added 9 sk.R.M. for transit from Hamburg to Denmark for total postage due of 37 sk.R.M.

1865 (Jun. 12) Veille, Norway to Ogden, Wisc., folded letter with manuscript "Veille 12/6 65"origin postmark, "Evje 15/6 1865" transit, carried by Hapag Line Saxonia from Hamburg June 25 to New York arriving July 10, red crayon "6" debit to Hamburg, New York "Hamburg Packet '35' Jun 24" debit exchange cds; some staining, some soiling, Fine, very scarce Hamburg Treaty cover from Norway, discovery example of the Hamburg Packet "35" exchange cds.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Letter carried by steamer directly from Norway to Hamburg (oval "NORWEGEN/direct." handstamp on reverse). 6 silbergroschen (16 sk.sp.) transit fee from Norway to Hamburg marked in red crayon as debit to Hamburg.

Letter originated in Helsingfors (Helsinki today). Prussian railway clerk marked 3 groschen on reverse for unpaid transit fees owed to Prussia and debited United States in dark blue ink, lower left, the same amount for transit fees from Finland allowed under U.S.-NGU convention. Postage due consisted of 5¢ unpaid letter fine plus 23¢ in depreciated greenback currency. Letter in closed mail bag from Hamburg to Chicago.

1870 (Feb. 10) Vardal, Norway to La Crosse, Wisc., cover with original Feb. 5 enclosure, Vardal (2.10) and Christiania (2.11) cds, Bremen blue "3" groschen script debit h.s. to U.S., Hamburg (2.16) backstamp, carried by North German Lloyd Line Weser II from Bremerhaven Feb. 19 to New York arriving Mar. 5, "Chicago Direct Mar. 7" cds with "24 / U.S. Notes" depreciated currency h.s., a scarce NGU Treaty cover to the Chicago exchange office with depreciated currency h.s.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter originated in small hamlet without a post office and was posted at Vardal. 3 groschen for transit from Norway debited to Prussia and marked on reverse by Kiel/Hamburg railway post office, then restated in blue on front by Bremen(?). Postage due consisted of 5¢ unpaid letter fine plus 19¢ in depreciated greenback currency. Letter in closed mail bag from Bremen to Chicago.
