(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Oct. 7) Corcelles, Switzerland to New York, N.Y., folded letter with "Corcelles 3 Oct. 48" origin cds and matching "P.P." circled h.s. with manuscript "20" kreuzer paid for all transit fees by British mails, French Office (Pontarlier) red "P.F." h.s., Liverpool (10.12) transit, carried by Cunard Line Europa from Liverpool Oct. 14 to New York arriving Oct. 25, New York red "24" retaliatory rating h.s. for packet fee, light edge toning, still Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter carried on the 17th of 25 Cunard mail voyages to the U.S. under the retaliatory order.

Lot 603    

1856 (Nov. 24) Winterthur, Switzerland to Wartburg, Tennessee, folded cover with "Winterthur 24 Nov. 56" origin cds, Bremen (11.27) backstamp with "10/15" debit rating, blue manuscript "5" rating updated to "4", carried by Ocean Line Hermann from Bremerhaven Nov. 29 but had to return to Southampton on Dec. 14 with a broken shaft and transferred her mails to Havre Line Fulton, which departed Dec. 18 and arrived in New York Dec. 31, "New York Am. Pkt. Dec 31" exchange cds with matching "25" cent due rating h.s., some small faults and soiling, Fine, a scarce Bremen treaty rate from Switzerland.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Swiss debited Baden 3 kreuzer for transit from 1st rayon. Baden debited Bremen 4 silbergroschen. Bremen showed breakdown of total fees as 10 grote German and foreign transit and 15 grote international fees.

1863 (Sep. 3) Zurich, Switzerland to Milwaukee, Wisc., blue cover with Zurich (9.3) cds, "Schweiz uber Baden" oval backstamp, black "Aachen, 4/9, 10cts" (9.4) debit cds to U.S., blue manuscript "5" updated to "3", carried by Cunard Line Arabia from Queenstown Sep. 6th to Boston arriving Sep. 16th, "Boston Br. Pkt. Sep 17" backstamp with "35" due h.s. and "In U.S. Notes" with "44" cents depreciated currency marking, Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Swiss debited Prussia 3 kreuzer (10 rappen) for internal postage and sent letter to Baden. The SCHWEIZ/über/BADEN marking was applied on the Baden railroad to show letter transited Baden from Switzerland. Prussians debited U.S. 10¢ (in Aachen datestamp) and placed in the Prussian Closed Mails. Boston marked 35¢ due if paid in coin or 44¢ in depreciated greenback notes. Both 3 and 5 silbergroschen markings in blue ink appear to be in error as the Prussian transit fee was 2 sgr. and 2 sgr. was owed to Switzerland.

1867 (Oct. 8) Amriswil, Switzerland to Aurora, Ill., unpaid cover with "Amriswil 8 Oct 67" origin cds, red Paris (10.8) transit with black "18" cent debit to U.S., carried by Allan Line Austrian from Londonderry Oct. 11 to Quebec arriving Oct. 21, "Chicago Am. Pkt. '21' Oct 24" exchange debit cds and matching "27/U.S. Notes" depreciated currency marking, additional boxed "Am. Service" h.s. applied, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

London sent Chicago mails on Allan Line steamers from Londonderry to Quebec. Letter carried by train from Quebec to Chicago where the boxed "Am. Service" marking was struck and marked for 21¢ postage due in coin or 27¢ in depreciated currency. Because French mails sent on Allan Line steamers were considered to be carried on British packets for accounting purposes, U.S. entitled to only 3¢ of 21¢ rate.
