1839 (Nov. 7) Amherstburg, Upper Canada to Chelsea, London, folded letter bearing red "Amherstburg U.C. Nov 7 1839" rimless cds, matching "Paid" and "British/American" h.s. with red manuscript "11d/25cts" rating totaled to "2N2", reverse with matching red manuscript "Steamer Charge 1/3d Paid" prepaid 25¢ steamship freight money rating, red "New-York Nov 18" exchange cds, carried by Black Ball Line New York from New York Nov. 19 to Liverpool arriving Dec. 14, "Liverpool/Ship Letter" and London (12.16) backstamps, manuscript "1" shilling due rating for 8d ship fee plus 4d uniform inland postage, F.-V.F., One of two known freight money covers from Amherstburg. Rare freight money cover during the 4d uniform British rate period.

Letter endorsed for the steamship Great Western but arrived at New York too late and was placed on a sailing packet to Liverpool, where 1s postage due marked, 8d incoming ship fee plus 4d uniform inland fee (in effect only from 5 December 1839 to 10 January 1840).

1840 (Jun. 2) Carradoc, Upper Canada to Edinburgh, Scotland via Katesville, folded letter with black "Katesville U.C." rimless d.s. with manuscript "6 June 1840" dating, manuscript "Paid 2/7½" rating for all fees to the U.K. including 12½¢ sailing ship freight money fee, red "New-York Jun 5" exchange cds, carried by Black Ball Line England from New York Jun. 19 to Liverpool arriving July 10, "Liverpool/Ship Letter" and London (7.11) backstamps, "8" pence due h.s. for uniform ship letter fee, file fold and edge toning, Fine, Only recorded freight money letter from Katesville.

1839 (Nov. 23) Chambly, Upper Canada to Overton, England, folded letter with blind strike of "Chambly" circular postmark and manuscript "23 Nov" dating, prepaid red manuscript "2/7" currency rating for 4½d Canadian inland, 11½d U.S. inland (18¾¢), and 1s3d (25¢) freight money fees, carried by British and American Steam Navigation Company British Queen on 3rd return from New York Dec. 2 to Gravesend arriving Dec. 25, red "Ship Letter/Gravesend" backstamp and manuscript "1/" shilling due rating for 8d ship fee plus 4d uniform inland postage, Very Fine, One of only two recorded freight money covers from Chambly.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

British Queen was the only steamship to arrive in the U.K. during the 35 day period (5 December 1839-9 January 1840) when a uniform 4d inland fee was in effect.

1839 (Dec. 10) Chambly, Upper Canada to Overton, England, folded letter with faint strike of "Chambly" circular postmark and manuscript "11th Dec" dating, prepaid red manuscript "1/11½" currency rating for 4½d Canadian inland, 11½d U.S. inland (18¾¢), and 7½d (12½¢) steamship freight money fees, red "Montreal L.C. DE 13, 1839" double circle date stamp with matching "Paid" h.s. with red manuscript "18¾" credit, carried by Black Ball Line Oxford from New York Dec. 19 to Liverpool arriving Jan. 11, "Liverpool/Ship Letter" backstamp and "8" pence due h.s. for uniform ship fee, Very Fine, One of only two recorded freight money covers from Chambly.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

This letter is a very early example of the uniform ship fee that was effective January 10th, 1840, only the day prior to arrival.

1840 (Feb. 10) Clarendon, Lower Canada to New Castleton, Scotland, folded letter with "Clarendon L.C." and manuscript "19th Feby 40" dating, magenta ink "USP 18¾" and "Ship 12½," total "paid 31½" in the upper right corner along with "9" under the "Paid."; indicating 9dcy Canadian postage, 18¾¢ for the U.S. postage to N.Y. and 12½¢ for the sailing ship freight money fee, carried by Black Ball Line England from New York on Feb. 25 to Liverpool arriving Mar. 17, "Liverpool/Ship Letter" backstamp with black "8" pence due rating for uniform ship letter rate, some edge flaws, F.-V.F., The only recorded freight money cover from Clarendon, Canada.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Black Ball Line "England" had to wait at anchor for favorable winds and sailed a couple of days late.

Letter sent in error to Leighton-Buzzard, then to Melchbourne. It was handled in England just four days before 4d uniform British internal fee went into effect, which would have made posted due just 12d.
