Transatlantic Mail to and from Austria

Lot 153    

1845 (Oct. 5) New Orleans, La. to Trieste, Austria, folded letter with blue "New Orleans La. Oct 5" cds with matching "Paid" h.s. and manuscript "10" rating, carried by Cunard Line Cambria from Boston Oct. 16 to Liverpool arriving Oct. 27, red London (10.28) backstamp and matching "Colonies/ &c Art. 12." accountancy h.s., red "Boulogne 30 Oct" entry cds, red crayon accounting, Trieste manuscript "59" Austrian kreuzer due; light hor. fold, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The combination of the new United States 5¢ and 10¢ internal rates and the "Colonies &c Art. 12." accountancy handstamp was only possible during a period of only about six and one half months.

Lot 154    

1848 (Feb. 5) New York, N.Y. to Steyer, Austria, folded letter with red "New-York Feb 5" exchange cds, carried by Havre Line Missouri from New York Feb. 6 to Havre arriving Feb. 23, blue Havre (2.23) entry cds, Steyer (3.2) arrival backstamp and manuscript "55" Austrian kr. due rating, Very Fine, Carried on the Last Voyage of the French Line.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The French Line was short lived, making only nine round trips before suspending operations.

Lot 155    

1848 (Jun. 19) Baltimore, Md. to Freiwaldau, Austrian Silesia, cover with blue "Baltimore Md. Jun 19" cds with matching "Paid" h.s. and manuscript "29" prepaid rating for all transit fees to Bremen, red "New York Jun 29" backstamp with "Paid Part" straightline incorrectly struck instead of "Paid All", carried by Ocean Line Washington that departed New York July 20 to Bremerhaven arriving Aug. 5, Bremen (8.5) boxed transit; small cover flaws, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter arrived in New York after 20 June sailing of Ocean Line steamer and had to wait one month for next steamer to Bremerhaven. It was addressed to a forwarding agent in Bremen,who reposted letter to Freiwaldau. When letter reposted at Prussian post office in Bremen, red crayon "x" marked across letter face as sign letter prepaid and "6x" marked on reverse.

Lot 156    

1850 (Jul. 17) New York, N.Y. to Steyr, Austria, folded letter with "New York ' 24' Jul 20" exchange debit cds, carried by Ocean Line Washington from New York July 21 arriving at Bremerhaven Aug. 6, red "9 America/über Bremen" and "10 1/3" due handstamps, various manuscript ratings, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Bremen debited Hannover 9 gutegroschen, a restatement of the 24¢ U.S. debit. A handstamp to show this was introduced in May 1849. Hannover marked 10 1/3 ggr. debit in error, then corrected to 11 ggr. debit to Saxony. Saxony debited Austria 16 9/10 neugroschen or 49 krCM. Postage due at destination was 55 kr.CM. Blue manuscript "Leipzig 10/8" in upper right corner marked on Saxony railroad.

Lot 157    

1862 (Mar. 12) New York, N.Y. to Triest, Austria, buff cover with dark green "Hotel Jegel, New-York" corner card with red "New-York Mar 12 1862" cds, 35¢ prepaid in cash for 30¢ PCM rate plus 5¢ registration, red manuscript "7" cent credit to Prussia, carried by Cunard Line Arabia from New York Mar. 12 to Queenstown arriving Mar. 24, red Aachen (3.25) transit and matching "Recomandirt" serrated box h.s., Trieste (3.28) arrival backstamp; minor embossing flaw, still Very Fine and attractive.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

New York had not started to use registration markings, but the circular datestamp used here is seen on registered transatlantic letters. Aachen marked serrated boxed "Recomandirt," the Prussian marking for a registered letter.

Lot 158    

1858 (Sep. 4) Pesth, Austria (now Hungary) to New York, N.Y., blue cover with original letter and Pesth cds, Bremen (9.10) backstamp and "5/10" debit h.s. to U.S., "N. York Brem. Pk. '15' Sep 26" debit exchange cds, edgewear, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Letter endorsed for Hamburg steamer but arrived too late. Hamburg sent letter to Bremen for the NGL steamer "Hudson" for its maiden mail voyage, which made only one round voyage as a mail steamer before being destroyed by fire at her berth in Bremerhaven.

Pesth debited Hamburg 9 neukreuzer for transit fee to Hamburg and 21 neukreuzer international fee. New York letter carrier added 2¢ carrier fee, making postage due 17¢. Carrier fee notations on transatlantic covers are quite uncommon.

Lot 159    

1862 (Aug. 17) Reute, Austria to Boston, Mass., cover with "Reute, 17 Aug" two-line postmark, "Aachen 5 Cts 20/8" cds debit to U.S., carried by Allan Line North American from Londonderry Aug. 22 to Quebec arriving Sep. 3, "Boston Am. Pkt. '30' Sep 1" debit exchange cds, F.-V.F., This is the discovery copy of the "BOSTON. AM.PKT. 30" circular datestamp, not recorded in Blake & Davis.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

In the summer months, mails for the U.S. were put ashore from the Allan Line steamer at Rivière du Loup on the St. Lawrence River, about 110 miles before arriving at Quebec. From here the mails went by train to Portland and Boston. The year was determined by the sailing dates and the break in the rim of the Aachen cds.
