(Mono) Bodie, California, bold strike of purple eight sided postmark dated May 1, 1878 (MON-140) on cover to Madisonville, La., franked with 3¢ green, two singles cancelled with purple grid handstamps, Extremely Fine, the earliest known cover from Bodie.Estimate $200 - 300.
Named after Bill Body who discovered gold there in 1859, Post Office established April 13, 1877 and at one point was one of the largest towns in the state with a population estimated at 12,000 to 16,000 (also one of the most dangerous places). Today a state park but there is still gold there according to some but can't be mined due to its preservation status.
