Tampa Fa/Nov. 11. 1836, red type I manuscript postmark with matching "25" rate on folded lettersheet to Augusta, Ga.; corner repair at lower right, Fine, ex Light.

Lot 1773    

Tampa Florida December 1841/2d., fine strike type II rimless cds with blue manuscript day "f" for "free" by postmaster on 1841 folded letter to the Adjutant General in Washington, D.C.; some fold splitting with reinforcement, Fine, This is the latest recorded example of this scarce postmark, ex Light.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The letter was from postmaster Augustus Steele acknowledging receipt of a package.

Lot 1774    

Tampa Fla/Dec 22' 1846, manuscript postmark similar to type I on folded letter with ms. "10" rate crossed out and sent free to Hugh White, M.C. in Washington, D.C., datelined Dec 19 Fort Brook, Very Fine, The latest of three type I Tampa postmarks and unrecorded in FSPH, ex Bleuler.

Tampa/Flor./Jan 22, red type IV cds with matching type C "X" in circle on (1850) folded cover to Philadelphia; minor flaw at left, Very Fine, The earliest of 5-10 recorded examples of the type C rate marking, all recorded between Jan 22 and Apr 2, 1850 and only known in red.

Lot 1777    

Tampa Bay Fa/May 14. 1834, type II manuscript postmark and matching "37½" rate on 1834 folded letter to Governor Duval in Tallahassee, endorsed "Mail, Election Returns", Very Fine, One of five recorded postmarks from the Tampa Bay post office before the name was shortened to Tampa in September of 1834, ex Thompson.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

When established, on November 24, 1831, the Tampa Bay post office was in Alachua County. On September 13, 1834, it became the county seat of the newly created Hillsboro County and the name was officially shortened to Tampa.

Lot 1778    

Tuscawilla, F/10 June, type II manuscript postmark and "Paid 25" rate on 1830 folded letter to Dresden, O., letter mentions staying with John Parkhill, the first postmaster at Tuscawilla; cover toning and contemporary manuscript notations on face, Fine, One of only seven recorded covers from Tuscawilla and the earliest of the six recorded type II postmarks, ex Thompson.

Uchee Anna Fla/April 8th, type II manuscript postmark in blue with matching "10¢" rate on 1846 folded letter to New York City, F.-V.F., Only about seven covers are recorded from Uchee Anna, this being the only example of the type II postmark in blue, ex Light.

Wantons' Flo/Febry 20, clear strike of red type V two-line datestamp with matching type a "Free" on 1828 folded letter datelined Fort King to the Adjutant General in Washington D.C., "On Service" endorsement at top, Very Fine, One of two known examples of this postmark and the only one in combination with the "Free" handstamp, ex Thompson.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

Until May 2, 1828, when the Seminole Agency Post Office was established, most mail from Fort King was posted at Wantons.
