Louisa Catherine Adams (1775-1852), Widow of John Q. Adams., Free frank signature, "L C Adams", on cover to W.D. Lewis, Esqr, Collector of Customs, Philadelphia, red "Free Washington D.C, Aug 8" postmark, one of the rarest Presidential widow franks, Very Fine to Extremely Fine.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Only First Lady born outside the United States, Louisa Catherine Adams did not come to this country until four years after she had married John Quincy Adams. Political enemies sometimes called her English. She was born in London to an English mother, Catherine Nuth Johnson, but her father was American--Joshua Johnson, of Maryland--and he served as United States consul after 1790. Louisa Catherine Adams died in Washington in 1852, and today lies buried at his side in the family church at Quincy. Louisa Catherine Adams was granted the franking privilege on March 9, 1848; it lasted only a few years until her death on May 15, 1852.

Jackson, Andrew Free Frank, c. 1840 (1767-1845) 7th President of the United States, 1829-1837. Bold manuscript free frank on undated folded letter sheet to his attorney Robert M. Benton at Lebanon, Tennessee, blue "Nashville, T. / Dec 24" cds, no year docketing, some expert reinforcement that does not detract, still Very Fine.

"Free, Z. Taylor, manuscript frank as president on buff cover to Tampa, Fla., postmarked red "Free Washington D.C. Sep. 17" cds, wax seal stain, edge wear and flap tears; accompanied by a second cover, an Aug 1849 folded letter from Fort Smith to President Taylor and sent Free under his franking privilege, Fine and quite rare, ex Robertson.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

Because Taylor was in office less than a year and a half prior to his death, his Presidential franks are among the most difficult to find.

Zachary Taylor, 1834 Receipt (1784-1850, 12th President 1849-50). Bold signature "Z. Taylor Col." on receipt for cord wood at Fort Crawford (2nd so named) of which Zachary Taylor was commander, quite rare, Choice Very Fine.
