1820, 1843 Transatlantic Fumigated Mail, two folded letters, 1820 Newton Gordon correspondence from New York to Madeira with single fumigation slit and business content concerning scarcity of corn; and 1843 Italy to United States with two fumigation cuts, red "New-York 'Ship' May 7" entry cds and "20¾" rating, a Very Fine pair.

1850 (Oct. 18) Lisbon, Portugal to New York, N.Y., folded letter carried privately to London, entered mails with (10.29) crown cds and unusual "3" cent debit h.s. to U.S., carried by Collins Line America from Liverpool Oct. 30 to New York arriving Nov. 12, New York "24" cent due h.s., Extremely Fine, This is the only recorded example of this "3" debit handstamp used on a transatlantic cover.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Letter carried "out of the mails" to London where it was posted unpaid to U.S. London used unusual "3" handstamp to indicate G.B. debit to U.S.

1851 (Nov. 4) Sydney, Australia to Boston, Mass. via Great Britain, datelined folded letter carried by Alert to the U.K., Maltese "LS, 6 AP 6, 1852" transit postmark and matching "3/Cents" debit handstamp, carried by Collins Line Arctic from Liverpool Apr. 7 to New York arriving Apr. 18, New York large "24" due handstamp, Very Fine, over five months in transit.

1857 (circa) (Nov. 12) Foreign Origin to Washington D.C. via New York, cover bearing 1857, 3¢ dull red tied by "New-York 'Paid' Nov. 12" cds, pencil "Due 3"; most of flap missing, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

This New York "Paid" cds was a special postmark used on mail of foreign origin bearing U.S. stamps. Ashbrook states this cancel is quite rare on the 3¢ 1857 issue.

Feb 12 1859" and manuscript "22" unpaid rating for French Mail rate, Boston "10" cent debit for U.S. transit from Mexico, carried by Cunard Line America from Boston Feb. 23 to Liverpool arriving Mar. 8, French entry (3.9) entry cds with "12" decimes due h.s., Négrepelisse (3.14) arrival backstamp, tiny edge tear, Scarce French Treaty mail from Mexico via U.S.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

From contents, letter written by junior naval officer on brig D'Oliver in anchorage off small island of Sacrificios, where Fort of San Juan de Ulma protects entrance to Veracruz. His vessel was based at Fort-de-France, Martinique. It was carried to New Orleans by mail steamer "Tennessee", a temporary mail steamer owned by Charles Morgan.

1859 (Sep. 1) Savannah, Ga. to the Balearic Islands, blue dated printed circular with red crayon "4" cent prepayment for the printed matter rate, New York large red "2" cent credit to G.B., carried by Cunard Line Africa from New York Sep. 14 to Liverpool arriving Sep. 25, via closed mails through France to Spain, La Junquera (9.27) and Palma de Mallorca (9.30) backstamps, perfect strike of Majorca "½ Rs." due handstamp for inland postage, Extremely Fine and choice printed matter use.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Under the 1848 U.S.-G.B. Convention, effective 15 Feb. 1849, the rate for printed matter sent from the United States to destinations beyond the U.K., was established at 4¢ per item. This amount was a combination of the 2¢ per item U.S. internal postage, plus 2¢ (1d) per item credit to the U.K.
