Confederacy, Anderson Court House, S.C., 1861, Black, fine strike of provisional marking on unused homemade cover, some light toning, F.-V.F., A very rare unused example. ex-Antrim, Peters.

The Anderson C.H. provisional envelopes were prepared using the "Paid" handstamp, which was used on both drop and regular postage rates. The ratings for the 5¢ and 10¢ envelopes were added, but the 2¢ drop rate envelopes have just the "Paid" handstamp.

Confederacy, Athens, Ga., Paid 10, provisional handstamps on cover addressed to "Honbl. Howell Cobb, Richmond, Va." and sent via Augusta Ga. who did not recognize the Provisional usage and applied their own small size "Paid 10" handstamp (type G) with matching "Augusta, Ga., Jul. 19" cds; minor edge wear and light fold at right, Very Fine.

THIS ENTIRE PROVIDES EVIDENCE THAT THE ATHENS MARKINGS WERE APPLIED PRIOR TO USE AND REPRESENTS A PROVISIONAL USAGE.

Confederacy, Athens, Ga., 1861, 5¢ Purple, horizontal pair, left stamp Type I, right stamp Type II, huge margins except just in at lower right, cancelled by light strikes of grid, matching "Athens Ga., Paid, Oct 25" cds on 1861 cover addressed to Lieut. John B. Cobb, Cobbs Georgia Legion at Yorktown Va., slightly reduced at right and small opening nick, Very Fine; with 1980 C.S.A. certificate.

A SCARCE DOUBLE-RATE FRANKING OF THE ATHENS 5¢ PROVISIONAL, THE TYPE I-II COMBINATION REFLECTS THE TWO-SUBJECT WOODCUT ENGRAVING.

Francis J. Crown Jr. reported 19 pairs of the Athens 5¢ Purple provisional used on separate covers. The condition of the pair offered here is certainly better than typical.
