ONE OF TWO KNOWN EXAMPLES OF THIS 3¢ TOPPAN, CARPENTER, CASILEAR & CO. ESSAY IN DUSKY BLUE.

It is believed by some student that this die essay was actually a die proof strike of the die used to make the "Roosevelt" and Pan-Pacific small die proofs, while others, including Clarence Brazer, believe this was a die essay for the 1851 issue.

"3", #26 mint right margin vertical strip of three showing medium plate no. "24", and #26 mint right margin vertical pair showing large plate no. "28"; some faults, a Fine group.

1852, 3¢ brownish carmine, type II, o.g., barest trace of hinge (appears n.h.), rich deep brownish carmine color, margins huge encompassing portions of all adjacent stamps, a Superb gem, without doubt one of the finest mint examples extant, this is the only example to obtain this grade with only one higher; with 2012 P.S.E. Graded certificate (Gem 100, SMQ $2,400 for 98).
