Hawaii, 1837 Truxton N.Y. to Sandwich Islands, lengthy 3½ page letter sent by Patty Smith to her daughter Lucia Garrat Smith after she learn of her arrival in Honolulu on April 9, 1837, sent to the treasurer of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions in Boston, Mass., with manuscript "Truxton N.Y., Dec 10" postmark and "18¾" rate, "received May 1st, 1839, Mother, Ansd. Sept -- 1839" docketing on front; cover edge wear and splitting along folds, F.-V.F., an early incoming letter.

Hawaii, 1853 Albany, N.Y. to Lahaina, Sandwich Islands, cover to Cornelia A. Bishop franked with U.S. 1851, 3¢ dull red, horizontal pair tied by "Albany, N.Y., Nov 28" cds, manuscript "5" in pencil applied by Honolulu post office for internal rate, reverse with 1854 docketing, Very Fine.

Hawaii, 1854 Freetown, Mass. to Lahaina, Sandwich Islands, origin cds on cover with matching straight line "Free" handstamp and manuscript "20" rate, with manuscript "Ship Moctezuma, Capt Tinker" notation; some light cover wear, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The whaler "Moctezuma" departed New Bedford on July 22nd, 1854 for Lahaina around the Cape of Good Hope to the Arctic and Okhotsk Sea (Siberia) using New Zealand as her base which she reached on January 20th, 1855. She did not land in Lahaina until November 19th, 1855, a journey of almost 180 days.

Bishop, franked with 1851, 10¢ green, type III, horizontal pair tied by "Albany, N.Y., Jun 18" cds's, manuscript "10¢" in red crayon for Hawaiian internal rate, Very Fine; with 1995 A.P.S. certificate.

Hawaii, 1855 ca. Silver Creek, N.Y. To Lahaina, Sandwich Islands, cover addressed to Revd. Serano Bishop franked with manuscript canceled U.S. 1851, 3¢ dull red, horizontal pair (positions 49-50L3), blue "Silver Creek, N.Y., Jul 2" origin cds and manuscript "due 4" at top, manuscript "9¢" in red crayon; light even toning and small cover hole, F.-V.F., apparently the sender was unaware of the April 1, 1855 rate increase to 10¢ for over 3,000 miles, hence the "due 4¢", 5¢ Hawaiian local postage was added on arrival totaling 9¢ due; with 1998 A.P.S. certificate.

Daniel Tinker (master of the whaler Moctezuma) franked with U.S. 1857, 1¢ blue, type V + 3¢ dull red, horizontal pair and single, grid canceled with matching "New London, Ct., Nov 18, 1858" cds; one 3¢ with minor perf flaws, otherwise Very Fine.
