Great Britain, British Autograph and Document Balance, of 5 items; including Queen Victoria signature on small piece, 1831 folded letter signed by Rev. Rowland Hill, undated letter signed by artist A.E. Chalon, letter written by Leonard C. Wyon to Lady Chantrey regarding his father work on a medal for Sir Francais Chantrey, and 1897 letter with initials of the Duke of York, Very Fine.

Great Britain, Free Franks, group of 6 comprising 1802 Evan Nepean Sec. of Admiralty folded cover, 1818 Charles James Fox cover front, 1822 cover front with "Earnest" free frank front to York Barracks, 1838 Lord Russell cover front, 1842 Admiral Lord Cockburn cover front who burned Washington D.C. in War of 1812, 1936 A. Eden free frank on mourning cover from foreign office who was later prime minister, Fine group.

Lot 1043

Great Britain, James Chalmers, signature on 1822 hand delivered receipt for published works to the Westport Library, accompanied by a printed 1837 "James Chalmers, Bookseller, Stationer, and Printer" receipt, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

James Chalmers was a Scotsman who it was claimed, by his son, was the inventor of the adhesive postage stamp. He established himself as a bookseller, printer and newspaper publisher and is known to have been the publisher of "The Caledonian" as early as 1822. His most burning enthusiasm, however, was postal reform, and from 1825 he campaigned the authorities to speed up the mail between Edinburgh and London by convincing them that this could be done without extra cost. He also a a submitter of several essays to the Treasury Competition in 1839.

Great Britain, Queen Victoria "The Q", initials on 1900 handcarried mourning cover to the Marin Hotel in West Lewes, reverse bearing the Royal arms on a wax seal; small piece of backflap missing and minor cover tone, otherwise Very Fine.

Great Britain, Rowland Hill, signature on two letters; 1825 holographic folded hand delivered letter written when he was 29 years old inquiring about the respectability of a father who sought to place his son at Hazelwood, a school Hill was employed at, and a 1873 thank you letter for books he unfortunately was not able to read do to his health, Very Fine.
