3¢ Rose, C. Grill, natural s.e. at right, tied by diamond grid cancel on embossed merchant corner card cover, "Boston, Mass., Nov 23" cds alongside stamp, with original 1867 enclosure, Very Fine, a very scarce on cover usage.

Lot 1575    

3¢ Rose, E. Grill, Illegal Bisects Used To Defraud, two diagonal bisect halves from different stamps used as 3¢ stamp (fraudulent reuse) cancelled together by circular grid, bottom half with normal grill and small piece out, top half with points up grill caused by fold-over and tied by "Grundy Centre Ioa. May 12" cds on cover to Concord Mich.; reduced slightly at left, F.-V.F., this is the basis for the Scott listing but left unpriced.; with 2006 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 88b    Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF TWO BISECTED 3¢ 1867 GRILLED STAMPS USED AS A 3¢ STAMP, ONE HAVING GRILL POINTS UP.

10¢ Green, E. Grill, Block of Three, minor wrinkle in top pair, canceled by "Ithaca, N.Y., Oct 29" cds and cork duplex on cover to Paris France, red "New York, Paid 24, Oct 31" exchange cds and French packet datestamp tying block, readdressed on reverse and forwarded to Rome, Italy with blue oval Hottinguer & Co. forwarder handstamp, forwarded again to Geneva, Switzerland before being returned to sender with numerous transit postmarks and rate marks; stamps with light wrinkling in top pair (certificate calls a crease), otherwise Very Fine and unusual; with 2013 P.F. certificate.

Sep 4" duplex on blue folded cover at the 15¢ closed mail rate to Amsterdam, Holland, red "New York Paid All Br. Transit Sep 5" exchange cds, carried by Inman Line City of Paris that departed New York Sep. 5 to Liverpool arriving Sep. 15, Amsterdam (9.10.68) arrival backstamp; file fold affects 12¢ and light cover wrinkling, F.-V.F.
