Uniontown H.B., Cal., Jun 13, 54 (Humboldt), blue oval date stamp with manuscript date (HUM-4870, R7) on cover to McDonough, N.Y., manuscript "10" rate and pencil docketing below, accompanied by 40 rate cover (cover edge wear) from McDonough, N.Y. to Uniontown from same correspondence with red San Francisco transit cds and manuscript origin postmark, F.-V.F., a rare Humboldt county postmark.

Lot 219    

Vernon, Cal., June 10th (Sutter), manuscript postmark (Williams SUT-900) on brown envelope to Somerville, Mass. with matching "Paid 40" rate; small mended internal tear in 1st name of addressee neat corner repair at top left, Very Fine appearance, ex Pearce.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

One of the original Post Offices of California and the only one that never grew. Opened from early 1849 to November 1853 and then a couple of more times later but no covers are known from either periods.

Lot 220    

Vernon (Cal.), Sept 22 (Sutter), manuscript postmark (SUT-900, R5) and "5" manuscript rate marking on stampless folded letter sheet to California Governor John McDougall at Vallejo, forwarded from Vallejo to San Jose with "Vallejo Cal, Sept 30" manuscript postmark and "ford 5 / 10" additional manuscript rate, Very Fine, a very scarce early California town, ex Nathan.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

This folded letter is datable to 1851 since John McDougall became California's second state Governor on January 9, 1851, and he held the office until January 8, 1852. One of McDougall's early acts was to sign legislation authorizing the relocation of the state capital from San Jose to Vallejo, which occurred officially on January 5, 1852. The state capital moved again to Benicia in 1853 and finally to Sacramento in 1854.

Yeomet, Cal., May 3 (El Dorado), neat manuscript postmark (Williams ELD-4120, R5) on 1855 10¢ Nesbitt entire on buff to New Hampshire, few fly specks, Very Fine and rare, with only three to four manuscript postmarks known.
