Jan 10" cds; pair moved and hinged for exhibition, light cover toning spot, Very Fine and choice forwarded use.

"H" 28th Regiment Texas Cavalry, Walker's Division at Marshall, Texas; opened for display, slight aging, Very Fine, a rare illustrated steamboat adversity use.

Confederacy, Galveston Tex Sep 1, cds on circa 1861 forwarded cover, "Macon, Geo. Aug 13" origin cds and matching two strikes of "Paid" and "10" rating handstamps (CSA type) to original destination of Galveston, then forwarded to Richmond Va., reduced slightly at edges, couple small, F.-V.F. appearance, An unusual usage that crossed the Mississippi River twice, ex-Powell.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

There was no extra charge of postage for the forwarded of first-class mail, when transmitted from the office of address to a different office. This 'forwarded' practice had its roots in the 1857 U.S. postal regulation and was continued by the CSA.

Confederacy, [Incoming Mail] Fort Smith, Ark, Jul 2 1863, sharp strike of cds and manuscript "Due 10" rating on adversity cover made from ledger form from soldier to his wife at Buchanan, Texas, endorsed "G.M. Pierce, Co. H", letter mentions news about replacement by Arkansas regiment and leave the army to go back to Texas; some separation and stain spots, Fine and scarce.

Confederacy, Lancaster Tex Mar 10, bold strike of cds and matching sharp "Paid" oval handstamp (CSA type A) on 1861 orange cover to Paris, Texas, original enclosed letter accompanies, docketed at left; reduced slightly at right, F.-V.F., This is the listing illustration example in the new CSA catalog., ex-Bleuler.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Texas had only just joined the Confederacy on March 6th, four days prior to the mailing of this letter. The postmaster may have been unsure of whether his U.S. postage was still valid for use and only handstamped the "paid" marking.
