Collect, red straight line frank (an unrecorded type of Wells Fargo frank) on 1864, 3¢ pink entire with blue "Wells, Fargo & Co., Sac Messenger" (Leutzinger type 11-9) pasted up to 1864 3¢ pink entire with Wells Fargo frank (Haller Type E) with blue octagonal "Collect" (Leutzinger type 7-25) cancelled with blue "Wells, Fargo & Co., Sacramento" double circle handstamp (Leutzinger type 11-1) to "Frisco" (San Francisco); slight soiling, otherwise Very Fine, a rare showpiece.

Wells Fargo and Company, Denver Col., Feb 26, 1872, blue double circle date stamp on 1870, 3¢ green entire to Sacramento, Cal., Very Fine, a very rare usage of the later circular Denver express handstamp.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Wells Fargo & Co. carried mail under government contract and thus there was very little need for letters to be directly handled by Wells Fargo. Therefore, only a small number of covers with a Wells Fargo handstamp or frank have been found used from Colorado.

Express Wells Fargo, Guaymas, Oct 16, 1887, purple oval date stamp on oversized corner card cover to Paris, France, manuscript "Via Benson A.T. & New York" routing endorsement and Santa Rosalia boxed date stamp, reverse with 8 overlapping 35c on 20c green frank entires canceled by express oval handstamp, front franked with six 10¢ Banknotes and cork canceled; cover and stamp flaws, Fine, an impressive franking.
