Lot 2459    

Confederacy, [Railroad] "Houston, April", manuscript postmark canceled 1862, 5¢ blue horizontal pair, faulty, on circa 1863 orange cover addressed to Judge Danl D. Avery, Care of Col Wm. Sharp at Chenango Station, Houston Tap & Brazoria RR, readdressed and forwarded to Brenham Tex. "via Houston Tx" with matching "Ford 20" cent due rating, bearing additional 1862, 5¢ blue pair pasted over other pair and tied by "Houston, Jun" cds, docketed "Oyster Creek. June 9th"; some cover restoration, F.-V.F. appearance.

THE ONLY RECORDED CONFEDERATE TEXAS COVER FORWARDED BY ALTERNATE RAILROAD MAIL ROUTE.

This cover was forwarded by alternate railroad route rather than direct stage route. Mailed for delivery to Houston Tap and Brazoria Railroad's Chenango Station that had no recorded post office. Forwarded to Brenham, Tx. via Houston along established rail lines.

Confederacy, [Railroad] Route Agent "H & T C R RD", manuscript postmark by an undocumented railroad route agent on 1862, 5¢ blue, pair and two singles, on cover to Brazos Bottom P.O., Tex., docketed "No. 24, June 15 1864"; reduced slightly at right and soiled, Fine.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

THE ONLY RECORDED COVER POSTMARKED BY A TEXAS CONFEDERATE ROUTE AGENT.

This cover was postmarked along the railroad route and deposited in the mail bag at Millican Tx. at the end of the line for delivery a few miles north to Brazos Bottom P.O.

Lot 2461    

Confederacy, "Tudor Hall Va. 1861", partial cds and matching "Due 10" rating handstamp (Type E) on orange cover endorsed "From Jno. C. McClenaghan, A.Q.M. P.A.C.S. (Provisional Army Confederate States), 8th Regt. S.C. Vols." and addressed to his wife Mr. Jne. C. McClenaghan at Marion C.H., S.C., Extremely Fine.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

Capt. McClenaghan is mentioned once in the official records cited for bravery at First Manassas while serving as the regimental Quartermaster.

Lot 2462    

Confederacy, Wartrace N. & C. R. R. Jun 3, 1863, route agent's oval datestamp and pencil "Due 10" rating on homemade cover addressed to "C.S. Central Laboratory, Macon Georgia", endorsed "Private John Little, Lumsden's Battery, Ala. Lt. Art.", Very Fine, ex-Solomon, Boshwit.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Lumsden's battery, Capt. C. L. Lumsden, was organized at Tuscaloosa, and reported at Mobile, November, 1861. After the battle of Shiloh, it relieved Gage's battery at Tupelo. It was in the battle of Corinth, in the Kentucky, Tennessee and North Georgia campaigns, and lost heavily in the battles of Farmington, Perryville, Murfreesboro and Kenesaw Mountain. From Dalton to Atlanta it lost 5 men, and at Nashville lost 28 men. As it was during the greater part of the war in the reserve artillery, it saw extremely hard service, being continually in demand. It was in the army of Mobile during the siege of Spanish Fort. At the end of the war it was transferred to Mississippi, where it surrendered.

Confederacy, Wartrace N. & C. R. R. May 31, 1863, route agent's oval datestamp and matching "DUE" handstamp on cover to Albany Geo., endorsed "J. A. Hill, Crews Cavly. Brigade" at top right; no flap, Very Fine.

Confederacy, Southern Express Co., Columbus Geo. Jun. 23. Ca. 1865 double-circle datestamp on brown cover to New York City, manuscript. "Express" and pencil "Paid 2/- W" express charge (two bits, or 25c), posted by regular mails at Richmond Va. with circular datestamp, U.S. 3¢ stamp has been removed from cover; slight wear, Very Fine, scarce post-war usage, ex-Knapp, Grant.
