Wells, Fargo & Co., Austin N.T., Aug 11, blue oval date stamp on fresh 1861, 3¢ pink entire to Placerville, Cal. with company blue frank at top, reverse with paste-up of upper portion of second blue frank entire on reverse paying the double rate; cover with slight roughly opening at right, otherwise Very Fine, a very rare paste-up usage of the Wells, Fargo & Co. blue frank.

Wells, Fargo & Co., Candelaria, Nev., oval handstamp on 3¢ green entire with Well's Fargo & Co. frank to Gold Hill Nev.; small tear at top, Very Fine, a rare Wells, Fargo & Co. handstamp on a very clean cover.

Candelaria was known as a raucous silver mining town, which surely lived up to its sordid reputation on the day in 1880 when unarmed Candelaria Wells Fargo Agent Peter Traver was shot and killed by miner Mike Owens, who was angry over the fact that Traver had paid him for his labors by check instead of in cash.
