"Cairo. Ill. Jan. 24", blue manuscript postmark with matching "S.B. 25" steamboat rating on 1845 folded letter to Peoria Ill., interesting personal contents, intending to purchase an interest in a steamboat, mentions a couple of boats by name, Very Fine and scarce steamboat marking, unlisted in A.S.C.C.

Charges To Sacramento City, 1851, folded letter datelined "Shagres 10th May 51", with red boxed "30" handstamp for the Panama rate to California, letter with interesting content regarding travels from California…I did not have a chance to write you when I arrived at Panama for we got in there just at knight and left early the next morning. I have bot my ticket for NY in the Steerage for $30.00 in the Steamer Falcon she runs to Havana and from there to New Orleans. I change boats at Havana and take the Ohio from there to NY it has cost me $157.20 including my passage to NY we crossed over to Gorgona the 23rd and down the river the 24th day out from San Francisco. I think ten days more I will be in NY we stopt at two ports on the Pacific side, Acapulco and Rialjo the former in Mexico and the latter in New GrenadaThere is two small Steam boats that runs part way up Thagrese River about thirty miles. I should think the Rail Road is in progress there is two stations on the river where they are at work they have got quite a lot of the irons on the ground all already and a large quantity of ties.; some tone spots and edge nick, F.-V.F.

Colegrove Transportation Lines, 1887 illustrated pass to general manager of the B.R. & P. Ry., showing steamship and four-horse stagecoach flanking central shield and flag motifs, liability clause on reverse, Very Fine.

Lot 879    

Hudson River Mail, 1823 (May 13), folded cover from Albany to New York City, where it was handstamped with red "Steam Boat" straightline and rated "12½" in manuscript for inland postage between 80 and 150 miles, Extremely Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

These "Steamboat" handstamps first appear in 1823, two years before they were officially required by the 1825 Postal Laws and Regulations. The 1823 use has been noted at only five post offices.

(New Orleans) Mail Route, red arc handstamp on Apr. 15th 1828 folded cover from New Orleans to New York with red manuscript "12½" rating, cover endorsed at bottom left per "Russell"; tiny ms. spot at top right, Very Fine.

Ouachita Packet Princeton, blue ornate purser's handstamp with illustration of cotton bale in center, struck on July 26th, 1848 folded letter from Beach Hills to New Orleans; light vertical file fold, small slit, Very Fine and choice, ex-Milgram.
Milgram No. 1146    Estimate $2,000 - 3,000.

THIS IS THE FINEST RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE MARKING.

Most strikes of this marking are incomplete and overinked. This strike is far superior with such a clear and complete strike.
