1860s Germany To the U.S., two unpaid covers by different packets, 1860 from Mainz to Ithaca by Hapag Teutonia with perfect strike "N.York Hamb Pkt '15' Nov 17" debit exchange cds; and 1863 from Vienna, Austria to Boston, Mass. carried by NGL Hansa with "N.York Brem Pkt '15' Mar 31" debit exchange cds; some edge wear, Very Fine.

Dec 10" cds and matching "Paid" handstamp with red manuscript "25" rating, bearing 1857, 1¢ blue and 24¢ gray lilac, tied by grid cancels, red "N.York 'Paid' Brem. Pkt. Jan 16" exchange cds with red manuscript "22" credit, blue Hamburg (2.4) transit backstamp, "Franco" straightline with red crayon "2" sgr. credit to Denmark; some light perf toning, Very Fine.

A REMARKABLE USE BEARING THE 1¢ AND 24¢ 1857 ISSUE PREPAYING THE 25¢ BREMEN-HAMBURG RATE TO DENMARK.

There is another example from this same correspondence to Burg dated May 31, 1861 bearing the 1857, 1¢, 10¢ and 24¢ prepaid at the 35¢ Prussian Closed Mail rate.

Steamer", red London (11.13) transit cds with "2/4" 2s4d rating for 2sh. from Valparaiso and 4d for British letter to Denmark, Hamburg (11.16) backstamp transit with blue manuscript "27" sgr. debit rating, Danish red crayon "119" sk. due rating; light horizontal file fold, Very Fine.

'21' Mar 29" debit exchange cds ties 1¢ blue (63) as payment of carrier fee, carried by Inman Line Glasgow that departed New York Mar. 29th to Liverpool arriving Apr. 13th, red London (4.13) backstamp with manuscript "1/-" due rating, Liverpool (4.14) arrival cds; small top edge tear, reduced slightly at left, a Very Fine and scarce carrier fee transatlantic use, ex-Baker.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

Letter prepaid 1¢ with an adhesive for the carrier fee to take the letter to the post office. Otherwise, the letter was completely unpaid. Examples of unpaid letters with a 1¢ carrier fee prepayment are not common.
