Lot 640    

Mead & Clarke Letter Express, full clear strike of blue oval handstamp on 1864, 3¢ pink entire to Kernville; cover restored at right including half of indicia and small portion of address panel, still Very Fine strike, this being One of Only Two Known Examples of This Handstamp.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Mead & Clarke ran an express in an area north of Fresno between Visalia & Havilah, California, connecting with Wells, Fargo & Co.

Lot 641    

Nevada City & Meadow Lake Express, printed boxed frank (NCM-001) on 1864, 3¢ pink entire addressed in pencil to Nevada City, 1866 docketing mentioning buying stock in the South Yuba Canal Co., Very Fine, one of three examples recorded of this short-lived express company that ran for less than a year.
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

Started in 1866, the Nevada City & Meadow Lake Express ran from Meadow Lake to Nevada City connecting with Wells, Fargo & Co. Due to the small amount of gold and heavy winter in Meadow Lake, there was no need for an express after the first year.

Northern Pacific Express, steel blue frank on 1874, 2¢ vermilion entire to Portland, Or., manuscript "12/7/83" date cancel and Walla Walla merchant corner card handstamp at left, Very Fine and choice.

Oroville & Quincy Express Co., black & red six-horse stagecoach frank with all large caps on second line (Thomas ORO-001) on 1874, 3¢ green entire to San Francisco, blue Wells, Fargo & Co., Oroville, Jan 24 oval date stamp cancelling indicia, Very Fine and choice, one of the finest examples of this short-lived express, with only seven usages of this frank recorded, ex Polland, Jarrett.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

This short-lived express company operated in 1874 from Oroville to Quincy as well as from Greenville, Crescent City and Taylorsville.

Pacific Express Co., horse & rider frank on two 3¢ Nesbitt entires, one in black and other in the scarce blue color, both with matching color Sacramento handstamps; blue frank cover damaged with backflap re-attached and reinforced, about Fine appearance.

Pacific Express Co., Auburn, Sep 2, oval date stamp (PAC-102) on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire to Nevada City, with Horse & Rider Illustrated Blue Frank at top left (PAC-005); small tear at top center not affecting handstamp or frank, Very Fine, a very rare blue frank usage, with only two known examples of this Auburn handstamp.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

A number of expresses has blue colored franks that saw limited usage. Their function is still not fully understood by students.
