Overland - San Francisco via Los Angeles, two items; one a Four-Horse Stagecoach illustrated cover from Marysville, Cal. to Illinois franked with 1851, 10¢, type III tied by grid handstamp (repaired with sealed cover tears), second a Hutching & Rosenfield Six-Horse Stagecoach illustrated design on rebacked cover front to Washington D.C. with 1862 Milpitas, Cal. postmark and matching "P.O. Free" frank, F.-V.F. appearance overall.

Per Pony, Free "Mc", manuscript endorsement in pencil of Wells, Fargo President Louis McLane on 3¢ pink entire to Virginia City, N.T., with original enclosure datelined "San Francisco, Mch 18th, 1863" regarding the selling of mining interests "…and soon as the property is sold I will deposit your share of the profits with Wells, Fargo & Co. subject to your order"; repaired cover edge tears at left and lower right corner, F.-V.F. appearance, an unusual and rare Virginia Pony free frank cover endorsed by Wells, Fargo President Louis McLane; accompanied by letters of attest by Dr. W. Scott Polland and Basil Pearce.

Via Nicaragua, Ahead of the Mails, red boxed handstamp on cover to Ann Arbor, Mich., manuscript "Free A. Felch" free frank with "Free" handstamp and "Steam Ship" two-line handstamp applied upon arrival in New York, Very Fine, ex Knapp, Wiltsee, Grunin & Robertson.

AN EXTREMELY RARE "VIA NICARAGUA" TRANS-CONTINENTAL COVER WITH ALPHEUS FELCH'S FREE FRANK AS PRESIDENT OF SPECIAL COMMISSION TO SETTLE LAND CLAIMS IN THE AFTERMATH OF MEXICAN WAR.

Alpheus Felch was Governor of Michigan from 1846 to 1847 and U.S. Senator from March 1847 to March 1853. In 1851, he was appointed by Franklin Pierce to be part of a commission to settle Spanish and Mexican land claims in California arising from the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican War. Felch served as president of the commission until 1856. This cover was mailed during Felch's stay in California and was franked in his role as commissioner.

Via Visalia & Los Angeles, illustrated Four Horse Stagecoach design with "Overland Mail, To All Part of the Union" slogan on stagecoach side, on cover to San Francisco with "Visalia, Cal., Oct 1" cds (TUL-3310) and matching "Paid" in oval and "3" rate handstamps, 1861 year docketing at left, Extremely Fine, illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 249), ex Haas, Pearce & Kramer.
