"Columbus, Mi. Apl 10", red manuscript postmark on 1822 folded letter with matching "25" cent rating to North Yarmouth Me., letter from Rev. W. Goodell to Rev. Asa Cummings; stain, Fine and early Mississippi missionary letter, letter was mailed when Gideon Lincecum was 2nd Postmaster of Columbus.

Columbus, Mi. Oct. "26", bold strike of sunburst postmark with manuscript "26" dating and matching "Paid 18¾" cent rating on folded letter datelined "Mayhew C.N. 23 Oct. 1826" to Natchez Miss.; edge flaws reinforced, Fine, a wonderful strike.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

ONE OF ONLY ABOUT 6 RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS FANCY SUNBURST POSTMARK.

This marking is known used Sept. 1826 to 1828. The letter from Reverend Cyrus Kingsbury concerned banking transactions. He was a missionary to the Choctaws and the father of the "Choctaw Intelligence" editor J.P. Kingsbury. The Choctaw Indians were being removed from the area at this time.

Columbus Miss. 1839 (Oct. 30) To Montgomery County, Republic of Texas, folded letter datelined "Choctaw Agency" and with red "Columbus Mi Oct 30 1839" cds and matching "Paid" straightline handstamp with manuscript "18¾" cent rating, addressed in care of Texas Agent at New Orleans, reverse with "Wm. Bryan, New Orleans, Agent of the Texian Post Office" oval handstamp, Houston "Ship" handstamp and manuscript "56" cent rating for 50¢ inland postage plus 6¢ ship fee, F.-V.F.

Lot 1002    

Mississippi Territorial Mail Via Natchez Trace, folded letter datelined "Richmond County, March the 23rd, 1808" (probably Virginia) with manuscript "25" cent rating to Adams County, Mississippi, endorsed "By the Western Mail and left in Washington"; some light cover overall aging and staining at top, Fine, an extremely rare westbound letter sent by the Natchez Trace.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE WITH A TRACE ROUTE MARKING.

The manuscript endorsement refers to the Natchez Trace was established by Congress on 1800 between Natchez & Nashville. The Trace followed Indian trails between these two cities with Washington, which was at that time the territorial capitol, only a short distance from Natchez.

Natchez, Nov - 13, bold straight line postmark on 1807 folded letter to Lexington, Ky., with manuscript "J. Henderson, P.M. Natchez, Free" frank, Very Fine, an attractive postmaster free frank usage. ASCC $750.

Natchez, Mi., Feb 2, cds with matching straight line "Paid" handstamp on 1838 folded letter to Philadelphia, Pa., manuscript "Express Mail" and "$3.00" rate; file fold, F.-V.F.

Ship Island, Miss. Apr 14, two line postmark with manuscript date on 1862 cover to Philadelphia, Pa., franked with manuscript canceled 1861, 3¢ rose and "Due 3" below, Very Fine, an lovely usage from this Union occupation post office.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Ship Island was occupied by Federal troops in December 1861 and was used as a staging area for troops in the attack of New Orleans which took place in April 1862.

"Columbus N.T., March 18th 1861", manuscript postmark with matching stylized "3" squiggles canceling 1¢ blue (24) strip of three on orange cover to Paoli Pa.; horizontal fold affects left stamp, right with flaw, no bottom flap and couple stain spots, Very Fine, This is the listing example for this town in Winter., ex-Winter.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Francis Becker was the third postmaster of Columbus Neb. from June 2nd 1858 until Dec. 4th 1862. This envelope appears to be postmarked and addressed in his hand. Nebraska Territory had just been greatly reduced in size on Feb. 4th 1861 following Kansas statehood on Jan. 29th 1861. The population of Columbus N.T. in 1861 was about 100 people.

Nebraska City Neb Jan 12, cds duplexed with circle of wedges ties 1¢ blue, 3¢ red, F. grills on cover to Prussia, E.J.G. Christy corner card and reverse with all-over billboard ad on reverse with principal businesses in Nebraska City, red Aachen (2.4.1869) framed transit, German arrival backstamp; opened at top and reduced slightly at right into right 3¢, light toning affects stamps, F.-V.F.
