Cincinnati O. May 27, red cds on 1838 folded letter to New Orleans La., manuscript "Express Mail" and "Paid 75" ratings; light staining and file fold separation, F.-V.F.

Lot 1017    

Columbus Ohio, two folded letters with strikes in red and black of 25mm circle of 17 torches, black dated "May 9" with manuscript day and matching "10" cent rating to Urbana Oh., red dated "Oct" updated to "Nov 6" in manuscript with matching "10" cent rating to Urbana Oh., later with lightened file fold toning, otherwise a Very Fine pair with remarkable strikes.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED SETS OF THIS FANCY COLUMBUS STAMPLESS POSTMARK IN BOTH COLORS.

Richard Graham recorded only two red strikes known in private hands. Black ink was used from January to September 1817, and red from Oct. 28 to Dec. 28, 1817. Ohio was the 17th State in the Union.

City Aug 1" cds and matching "Free" straightline rating handstamp, free franked "Joseph Nourse, Regr" as Register of the Treasury, 1828 notation, Very Fine and attractive.

Columbus Ga. 1838 (Jan. 19) To Independence, Texas, red "Columbus Ga Jan 19" cds with matching "Paid" straightline handstamp and manuscript "75" cent express mail rating on folded letter, manuscript "Express Mail" at top and "Care of Nathl C. Livermore Esqr., New Orleans" at bottom endorsement, bold "Sam Ricker Jr., Agent of the Texian Post Office, New Orleans, La." oval handstamp, partial indistinct "Steam Packet Columbia" two-line handstamp in red, flap with Galveston Tex. provisional postmaster Gail Borden Jr. manuscript "Galveston, Feb 5, 38" postmark and "56¼ Ship" due rating for the 50¢ inland postage plus 6¼¢ ship fee; fold separations taped, Fine.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

The Eastern Express Mail was a special service of the Post Office Department, often referred to as the Eastern Pony Express running between New York and New Orleans performed by post riders on horseback. The rates were three-times the regular postage rates.

Columbus O., Registered, Feb 7, light blue cds with matching target cancels tie 1¢ blue (156) and 30¢ gray black (165), on circa 1876 legal size cover to Batavia N.Y. at seven-times the 3¢ letter rate plus 10¢ registry fee, docketing indicates report for 1875 is enclosed, Very Fine and rare high-value use.

Columbus, O., Correct, Sep 26 1884, L.D. Myers, P.M., perfect strike of fancy cds on registered cover bearing 2¢ red brown (210) and 10¢ brown (209), tied by two strikes of resurrected prison bar grid fancy cancel, Philadelphia Sep. 28th arrival backstamp; reduced slightly at right, Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

This is the only recorded example of this Columbus "Correct" cds. This is also the only known example of the resurrected "Prison Bar" grid used to cancel stamps on first class mail. The grid is usually used to cancel unsealed circulars with 1¢ stamps. Illustrated in James Doolin's article "Resurrection of the Columbus, Ohio Seven Bar Grid in a Square" in The Chronicle 210 May 2006 p. 146.

(Columbus O.) "Received Jun 5 1896, Columbus, Ohio. / Weather Forecast for To-Morrow, Showers Warmer", purple weather report handstamp receiver on reverse of 2¢ green entire cancelled by "Nelsonville Ohio Jun 5 1896" duplex, Very Fine and rare.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

Weather report kits were made by Superior Rubber Stamp Co. of Chicago Il. and sold for $6.00. One of only three recorded examples of this weather report marking.

Deersville, Ohio, Feb 27, bold blue fancy stenciled segmented circular townmark on ca. 1846 folded letter sheet to Philadelphia, Pa., "10" in circle rate handstamp, Extremely Fine, one of the finest known examples; with 2010 P.F. certificate.
