Aaron Burr, free frank signature on ca. 1790 folded letter sheet to New York City, with "17/Ma" Bishop mark and matching straight line "Free" handstamp, Very Fine and choice, signature as U.S. Senator from New York.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

On July 12, 1804, Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton dueled in New York City. Hamilton later died of the gunshot wound that he sustained during duel.

Jefferson, Thomas, (1743-1826) 3rd President of the United States, 1801-1809. Clear full "free Th: Jefferson" free frank as ex-President on folded letter sheet to John Vaughan in Philadelphia, Pa. in his hand, clear red "Charlotville, Va., Mar 14" cds with additional manuscript "Free" at upper right, inner docketing "Jefferson Thomas, 1820, Monticello 12 Mch"; expertly restored edge tear at top, otherwise Very Fine.

Lot 1177    

Lincoln, Abraham, (1809-1865) 16th President of the United States, 1861-1865. Clear full "A. Lincoln" free frank signature as President on ca. 1864 legal size cover addressed in his hand to "Major General Hurlbut, New Orleans, Louisiana", additionally endorsed "Private" at top, blurry yet discernible strike of "Washington, D.C., Free" cds, Very Fine; with photocopy of 1967 G.T. Banks signature attest.
Estimate    $7,500 - 10,000.

Major General Stephen A. Hurlbut led a corps under William T. Sherman in the 1864 Meridian expedition. Hurlbut subsequently commanded the Department of the Gulf, succeeding Nathaniel P. Banks and serving in that capacity from 1864 to 1865 when he was mustered out. This letter was most certainly written while Hurlbut was in command.

Washington" signature as Commanding General of the Continental Army on folded letter sheet addressed to "Lieut. Colo. Reid, Commanding at Albany", inner docketing "Genl. Washington, 11th July 1782"; cover edge and file fold splitting expertly silked, Fine.
Estimate    $7,500 - 10,000.

AN ATTRACTIVE GEORGE WASHINGTON SIGNATURE AS COMMANDING GENERAL OF THE CONTINENTAL ARMY.

This letter, carried by military courier, was signed by Washington just before resigning his military commission on December 23, 1783.

Detroit "Rail Road, Way", clear strike of oval handstamp on cover with matching "Detroit Mich. Jan 22" cds and bearing 3¢ rose (65) tied by target cancel to Utica N.Y.; reduced slightly at left, Very Fine and rare marking.

This "Rail Road Way" oval handstamp of Detroit was applied on mail handled by the Grand Trunk Rail Road.
