Steamboat Grey Eagle, Oct 16 1865, cds on yellow cover to New Orleans La. bearing 3¢ rose (65) cancelled by four-rings; cover reduced at right and top edge reinforced with light fold through stamp, Fine, Illustrated in Milgram on page 326.
Milgram No. 567    Estimate $100 - 150.

Envelope carried on the "Grey Eagle" to New Orleans prior to the reestablishment of the Vicksburg to New Orleans Star Route in June 1866.

Nov 20" cds and bearing 1851, 3¢ dull red tied by "Way" handstamp, Very Fine, Illustrated in Milgram on page 346., ex-Wagshal.

Steamer H.M. Wright, red oval handstamp on buff cover addressed to Warrenton Miss., bearing uncancelled 3¢ dull red (11A), carried outside the mails on Route 7511; reduced at right, internal cover tear affects margin, Fine, a scarce marking.
Milgram No. 609    Estimate $200 - 300.

The H.M. Wright of 366 tons was built for the New Orleans - Vicksburg trade and owned by J.W. Arthur & Co. and Capt. J.D. Clarke who was also her Master. Sold June 1954 to Capt. Charles H. Manson.

J.M. Turner, 10-line stencil handstamp on reverse of 3¢ green entire cancelled by "New Orleans Jun 28" duplex, addressed to the care of the postmaster at Hermitage La. who was also the agent for the False River Line, blue Bouton et Fil & Co. merchant handstamp, a Very Fine marking, ex-Paul Rohloff; with 1999 P.F. certificate.
Milgram No. 703    Estimate $1,500 - 2,000.

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS MISSISSIPPI RIVER STENCILLED CACHET.

Only three examples of stencil Name-of-Boat cachets have been recorded for inland waterway steamboats. That for the "J.M. Turner" and "Rose" is the most detailed of these.

Lot 4129    

Steamer Josiah Lawrence, choice strike of red octagonal handstamp on buff cover to Greensburg La. endorsed "Via N Orleans", entered mails with red "New Orleans La. Apr 2" cds and matching "Way 6" rating handstamp, docketed "Recd Apl 6" at right; mended bottom corners, F.-V.F., a rare marking, Illustrated by Milgram on page 730.
Milgram No. 730    Estimate $300 - 400.

Greensburg La. was located on the post road 44 miles northeast of Baton Rouge. Route 4829 was contracted by the trip, the "Josiah Lawrence" ran the New Orleans to St. Louis trade from 1848 as a freight boat and clearly ran contract mail trips.

Lot 4130    

Steamer Louis D'Or, neat oval handstamp cancels 3¢ red Nesbitt buff entire from Carroll Hoy correspondence to New Orleans La., endorsed "per Louis D'Or", usual filing hole; accompanied by Steamer Louis D'Or, Feb. 2nd 1861 passenger fare receipt for Henry Marston and Negroes from Port Hudson probably to New Orleans, this was 24 days after Secession of Mississippi from the Union, a Very Fine pair.
Milgram No. 812    Estimate $400 - 600.

Marston owned plantations on the Mississippi River and the Clinton Bank. A native of Massachusetts and opposed to slavery, he may have been trying to help escaped slaves. The "Louis D'Or" was a 343 ton steamboat built in 1860.

From Steamer Louisa, red oval handstamp on 3¢ red Nesbitt entire to New Orleans, entered mails with red "New Orleans La. Aug 16" cds and black "Steam" straightline cancels indicia; tiny top opening nick and usual filing holes, Very Fine.

From Steamer M. Relf, red oval handstamp on orange cover from the Carroll Hoy correspondence to New Orleans La. bearing 1857, 3¢ dull red cancelled by partial grid cancel; cover tear and small flaws, taped flap tears, F.-V.F.
Milgram No. 950    Estimate $150 - 200.

The engines and other fittings of the "J.M. Relf" were used to build the "Milton Relf" in 1855. This is the same marking used for the "J.M. Relf" with the "J" removed.
