(Vicksburg to Greenwood Route 7312) Vicksburg and Yazoo River Packet Dew Drop, oval handstamp on cover from the Carroll Hoy correspondence to New Orleans La. on the course of Route 7312 circa 1859; typical filing hole, flap tear, Very Fine.
Milgram No. 339    Estimate $150 - 200.

From October 1858 to May 1861, Leathers and Holmes were contracted for Route 7312 Vicksburg to Greenwood at $14,875 a year for three times a week service. In September 1865 after the Civil War, this route was contracted as 7202 to S.E. Ogden at $2,900 a year for three times a week service.

The "Dew Drop" of 184 tons was built in 1858 for Capt. Parisot of Vicksburg.

(Vicksburg to Greenwood Route 7312) Regular Vicksburg Yazoo & Tallahatchie Friday Packet Warren Belle, printed scroll corner card on 3¢ pink (U59) buff entire from the Carroll Hoy correspondence to New Orleans La., entered mails with "McNutt Miss Aug 20" cds and matching target canceling indicia, carried by post road to Greenwood and put onto Route 7202 for Vicksburg, then transferred to Route 8106 for New Orleans; partial flap and small opening flaw at top, Very Fine.

(Yazoo River) Mail Packet Home, red oval handstamp on 1853-55 3¢ Nesbitt entire to New Orleans La., cancelled by "Vicksburg, Miss. Jan 6" cds, small spindle hole, flap tears and slight paper loss, F.-V.F., a scarce Vicksburg & Yazoo City Mail packet use.

(Yazoo River) Steamer John Strader, red intaglio circular handstamp on 3¢ red Nesbitt buff entire from the Carroll Hoy correspondence to New Orleans La., entered mails with indistinct red New Orleans Sep. 25th cds and black "Steam" straightline; vertical fold, usual filing hole, F.-V.F., ex Klein-Somdal.
Milgram No. 718    Estimate $300 - 400.

The "John Strader" of 235 tons was built at California Pa. in 1852 and was lengthened by 17 feet in 1853. She ran the New Orleans to Yazoo River trade under Capt. J.C. Brown and her owner W.W. Allien as her clerk.

(Yazoo River Route 5714) From St. Bt. Monroe, red oval handstamp on blue folded letter datelined "Troy Miss. March 25th 1851" from the Carroll Hoy correspondence to New Orleans La. carried outside the mails but on the course of Route 5714, Very Fine, ex-John R. Hill Jr.

The "Monroe" of 183 tons was built at New Albany in 1848 for Isaiah King, Capt. Samuel Gwartney also acted as Master for this steamboat.

(Yazoo River Route 5714] From Steamer W.A. Violett, bold strike of red oval handstamp on blue folded letter datelined "New Orleans 31st August 1850" and addressed to Leflore Miss. that is near Greenwood on the Yazoo River, endorsed "B/L 'W. a. Violett' "; spindle hole, Very Fine.
Milgram No. 1439    Estimate $300 - 400.

In June 1850, Wallis & Hogan were awarded the contract for the Vicksburg to Yazoo City Route 5714 at $1,495 per annum for a three times a week service. The "William A. Violett" of 152 tons was built at Elizabeth Pa. in 1848 with four owners of whom her Master, Capt. Samuel Gwartney was one.

(Sunflower River) Sunflower River Packet News Boy, blue cds on 3¢ pink entire (U58) from the Carroll Hoy correspondence to New Orleans La., indicia cancelled by manuscript "X"; usual filing holes, Very Fine.
Milgram No. 996    Estimate $100 - 150.

Prior to the Civil War routes were contracted from Vicksburg on the Yazoo River and its tributary, the Sunflower, to McNutt. The route was not reinstated after the Civil War although boats continued to carry letters on the route.

The "News Boy" of 115 tons built at Brownsville, Pennsylvania in 1859 for the Red River trade. Capt. Allen Fowler and others bought her in February 1862 and although stated by "Way's Packet Directory" to have gone to the Attakapas River trade after the war, she clearly also ran north on the Mississippi to the Sunflower River.
