Lot 1908    

Hawaii, "Ewa, May 3d 1844" to Amherst, Mass. via New London Ct., dateline on lengthy 3+ page folded letter written by Artemas Bishop to his son Sereno E. Bishop at Amherst College, Amherst Mass., endorsed "To the politeness of Perkins, Esqr", carried by privately to U.S., entered mails with red "New London Conn. Jan 24" cds and "10" rating to Amherst; couple file folds, Very Fine, ex-Van Dyke.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Reverend Artemas Bishop (-1872) was part of the second company of missionaries that came to Honolulu in 1823 on the brig "Thames". This letter is written to his only son, Sereno Bishop (1827-1909), who was also a missionary. He notes in the letter, "I will inform you when I shall have written, which will be by the first returning vessel. This goes by the hand of a gentlemen belonging to New London, a Mr. Perkins, a lawyer of that place, who is to sail in a few days for Callao, and from thence to the U.S. by way of Panama and the West Indies." Letter mostly concerns studies at college but ends with "Mrs. Dole of Punahou died the other day, and left 2 little infants, the youngest but 3 days old.".

Lot 1909    

Hawaii, "Hana, Maui, June 1845" to Parsippany N.J. via Providence, datelined 3+ page folded letter to Parsippany N.J., entered mails with red "Providence R.I. Mar 6" cds and matching "Ship" handstamp with "7" cent rating for 5¢ inland postage plus 2¢ ship fee, forwarded to Madison with blue manuscript "Parsippany N.J. / March 11" postmark and 5¢ forwarding rating totaled to 12¢ due; minor bottom edge tear, F.-V.F.

Hawaii, 1845 (Oct. 20) Bridgeport, Conn. to Honolulu via Boston, folded letter with red "Bridgeport Ct. Oct 20" cds with matching "Paid" and "5" rating handstamps, addressed to Rev. Dwight Baldwin at Sandwich Islands, forwarded via the Boston Missionary Rooms, letter carried by Ship Charles from Boston to Hawaii arriving at Honolulu Mar. 21st, letter mention's hearing of the death of Mr. Peck and that a packet leaves Boston on the 23rd, docketed as received Mar. 25th 1846, 129 day voyage, F.-V.F.

Hawaii, SCHOONER "VAQUERO.", bold strike of straightline ship handstamp (Gregory AUXSH-SF [SCHOONER "VAQUERO."], Rarity 1RRRR) on cover with original letter datelined "San Francisco Nov. 9th 1854", addressed to Dr. Wm. S. Mills at Honolulu, Hawaii, partial strike of matching "G. B. Post & Co., San Francisco, Forwarded by" octagonal framed handstamp, Very Fine.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED STRIKES OF THE SCHOONER "VAQUERO." SHIP HANDSTAMP WITH DOUBLE QUOTATION MARKS.

"Vaquero" first arrived from San Francisco on September 27, 1854, having departed San Francisco September 8. This cover was carried on the sailing from San Francisco departing November 10th 1854 and arriving at Honolulu on December 1st. She continued to make runs between Honolulu and San Francisco until June 16, 1855.

'VAQUERO.'], Rarity 1RRRR) on folded letter datelined "Papeete, 13 Mars 1855" and addressed to Honolulu, Hawaii, flap with manuscript "forwarded San Francisco May 22 by Bottcker pr. Vaquero" forwarder's endorsement, clear strike of "G. B. Post & Co., San Francisco, Forwarded by" octagonal framed handstamp; minor ink erosion, Very Fine.
Estimate    $3,000 - 4,000.

ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED STRIKES OF THE SCHOONER 'VAQUERO.' SHIP HANDSTAMP WITH SINGLE QUOTATION MARKS. A REMARKABLE USE FROM TAHITI VIA SAN FRANCISCO TO HONOLULU.

The Schooner "Vaquero" departed San Francisco on May 23rd with the New York mail of Apr. 20th and European mail of Mar. 31st., arriving at Honolulu on Jun. 5th.

"YANKEE."], Rarity 1RRRR) on folded letter datelined "San Francisco, 5 Juni 1855" and addressed to Honolulu, Hawaii, matching clear strike of "G. B. Post & Co., San Francisco, Forwarded by" octagonal framed handstamp; minor ink erosion, Very Fine.

THE ONLY RECORDED STRIKE OF THE BARK "YANKEE." SHIP HANDSTAMP WITH DOUBLE QUOTATION MARKS.

The Bark "Yankee" sailed from San Francisco Jun. 7th 1855 to Honolulu arriving Jun. 19th.

Black Warrior via San Francisco" inside endorsement, docketed as received in San Francisco Oct. 8th 1859 on backflap, black "Forwarded by McRuer & Merrill, San Francisco" forwarder's oval on reverse and offset on front, endorsed "pr 'Yankee' ", Very Fine.

AN EXTREMELY RARE LETTER FROM HONG KONG, CHINA TO HONOLULU SENT VIA SAN FRANCISCO.

Letter was carried as endorsed by the Bark "Yankee" from San Francisco Nov. 2nd with New York mail of Sep. 20th and Oct. 5th via Panama, arriving at Honolulu on Nov. 15th.
