Great Britain, 1779 (Jul. 28) Kingston, Jamaica to Lancaster, England, folded letter datelined "Kingston 28th July 1779" from William Smellie to Anthony Baldwin, endorsed "p favr of Capt. Goad" at lower left, "LIVER / POOL" two-line handstamp on flap with manuscript "3" pence due rating for 2d inland postage plus 1d ship fee, Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The LIVER / POOL two-line handstamp (LL33) was 28x16mm used from 1779 to 1785 on incoming mail from Kingston, Jamaica.

Great Britain, 1792 (May 6) Grenada to Glasgow, Scotland via Liverpool, datelined folded letter carried by private ship to Liverpool, entered mails with two-line "Liverpool / Ship" handstamp (LL603 / S1) and manuscript "2d." pence ship rating, manuscript "11" pence rating for 9d inland plus the 2d ship fee, clean and Very Fine.

Great Britain, 1851 (Oct. 4) Liverpool, England to Quebec, Canada, folded letter bearing G.B. 1d red, two 2d blue, 1s green, margins to cut in, all tied by strike of "466" oval grid cancels for the prepaid 1s5d British packet rate, Liverpool (10.4) backstamp, carried as endorsed by Cunard Line America departing Oct. 4th to Boston arriving Oct. 17th, docketed as received Oct. 19th, F.-V.F.

Great Britain, 1854 (Dec. 13) Kirkintulloch, Scotland to Durham, Canada West, cover bearing G.B. 6d purple embossed, margins to just in, tied by oval grid cancel for prepayment of the 6d Canadian packet rate, reverse with Kirkintulloch (12.13), Glasgow (12.13)and Liverpool (12.14) backstamps, carried by Collins Line Atlantic departing Dec. 18th to New York arriving Dec. 31st, overland to Canada with "1d" pence and "2½" cents due ratings; faults and soiling, Fine.

Imperador to Liverpool arriving Jan. 4th, green "South-Amern. Packet, 'A', Liverpool, 4 JA 1855" transit backstamp, red London (1.5) backstamp with matching "Colonies &c. Art. 13." framed handstamp, manuscript "1/9" 1s9d debit rating, red Calais (1.5) entry cds with black "15" decimes due rating handstamp, Paris (1.6) arrival backstamp, Very Fine, the Liverpool South American packet marking is quite scarce.

Lot 2061    

Great Britain, 1856 (May 24) Demerara, British Guiana to Liverpool, England, blue folded letter with partial "Demerara, MY 25 1856" backstamp, red London (6.14) backstamp and manuscript "2/" shilling rating, experimental "Liverpool, JU 15 1856" datestamp with dotted arc, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Liverpool experimented with a cancellation in which the name and arcs consisted of small holes made by perforating pins. The steel pins often did not penetrate the letter surface as seen in this example. The marking was despatched from the G.P.O. in London on 22 March 1856. A second marking was despatched on 2 April 1857. Examples of this marking are not common and green ink was used on South American origins.

Great Britain, 1857, 1858 South America to Liverpool, England, two folded letters with dotted Liverpool double-arc datestamps, 1857 with Demerara (8.25) and London (9.14) backstamps, Liverpool (9.14) arrival cds, manuscript "2/-" shilling due rating for double packet rate, 1858 with Rio de Janeiro (5.14) and London (6.13) backstamps, Liverpool (6.14) arrival cds, manuscript "1/-" shilling due rating for single packet rate, a Very Fine pair at the single and double packet rates.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

In 1857, the Liverpool head post office introduced experimental handstamps incorporating pins, this marking had just two arcs set in pin dots to minimize the amount of damage to the actual letters, it was used on incoming mail from South America during the period of 1857-58.

Lot 2063    

Great Britain, 1862 (Nov. 25) London, England to Montpellier, France, blue folded letter with blue London (11.25) origin backstamp and "Too-Late G.P.O." circular handstamp, bearing G.B. 4d vermilion tied by bold strike of "10" in grid cancel, red "PD" in circle and small "D" handstamps, perfect bold strike of "Liverpool / Exempt Ship" two-line handstamp, Calais (11.26) entry cds, partial Montpellier (11.27) arrival backstamp, Very Fine and choice.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Exempt payment handstamps were used at the ports of London and Liverpool to indicate that the mail would be carried by sea without charge. It was only applied if the sender of the letter was sending cargo by the same ship with the Consignee's name appearing on the ship manifest.
