1710 (Aug. 26) Philadelphia Pa. to Liverpool, England, via New York, datelined folded letter from the same Brown correspondence yielding the 1712-13 Bristol packet letters, privately carried to New York where apparently transferred to private ship for conveyance to England, received with small "DE / 30" Bishop mark on reverse, manuscript "2" pence rating crossed out and updated to "In all 5", docketing on flap, paper faults; Fine., Fine, ex-Siskin.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

1712 (Jul. 2) Philadelphia Pa. to Liverpool, England, folded letter with "Philada, July 2d 1712" dateline from merchant Robert Lidderdale to John McWilliam, endorsed "pr mary hoop gally Capt John Annis Comdn" at lower left, manuscript "Q.D.G." for Que Dieu Garde (let God protect the ship and master), London "AV / 25" Bishop mark and "5" pence rating crossed out and updated to "In All 9" pence due rating, Very Fine and scarce early transatlantic mail from Philadelphia.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

This commercial letter was carried by Galley Captain John Annis of ship "Mary Hoop" and discusses the sending of cargo to London, Glasgow and Guernsey containing barrels of Silvestri Corn and Flour.

1787 (Apr. 28) Liverpool, England to Philadelphia Pa., folded letter with "Liverpool April 28th 1787" dateline and endorsed "Packet / QDG" at lower right, brownish "Liverpool / 206" two-line postmark with red ms. "p 3N" prepaid rating for three times the 1 shilling packet rate, London (5.2) backstamp, received in New York with manuscript "6" dwt triple rating for three times the 2 dwt rate for 60-100 miles, Philadelphia manuscript "2/8" 2 shilling 8 pence local currency rating (30d postage plus 2d carried fee), Very Fine, ex-Siskin.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

The rare "LIVERPOOL / 206" two-line postmark (LL39) was 38 x 12mm and recorded used only during the period of 1786, but this item extends the recorded period of use to 1787. This is the first of two different Liverpool straightline mileage handstamps that show the mileage was 206 miles to London.

1789 (Dec. 2) Liverpool, England to New York N.Y. via Norfolk Va., datelined folded letter endorsed "p Kitty via Norfolk" at lower left, "Norfolk. Mar 23" straightline handstamp and manuscript "Sh 4" dwt rating for 3d 8 gr rating for 400-500 miles to New York plus 16gr. ship fee, New York manuscript "2/" shilling local currency rating; some edge faults, fold toning and splitting, F.-V.F., unlisted in the ASCC.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

The "Kitty" was a 300 ton rigged sailing ship regularly carrying a cargo of tobacco from Norfolk Va. to Liverpool. The ship eventually sank at Fishguard on its approach to Liverpool on January 14th 1819.

1815 (Apr. 8) Liverpool, England to New York N.Y., folded cover with red "Post Paid Withdrawn Ship Letter Liverpool, 8AP8, 1815" double-circle datestamp on flap and red manuscript "1/9" 1s9d prepaid rating, endorsed "p Elizabeth" at bottom right, entered mails with New York red "9" cent war rating for ship letter fee (6¢ port of entry plus 50% surcharge), Very Fine; handstamped and signed by Stanley B. Ashbrook on reverse.
Estimate    $1,500 - 2,000.

A RARE EXAMPLE WITH THE WITHDRAWN SHIP MARKING NOT STRUCK ACROSS THE FLAPS.

The Act of October 10th 1814, made it illegal to place an outbound letter on any ship privately, unless the letter had first been presented to the British Post Office and a fee paid equal to one-third of the combined inland and sea packet postage. Upon payment, the letter received the "Withdrawn Ship Letter" handstamp and the sender was allowed to send the letter by any ship of his choice. In that the Post Office was providing no service at all for this little used and unpopular act, it as terminated on July 11th 1815.

1815 (Jul. 21) Liverpool, England to Montreal, Canada via New York, folded letter with black "Post Paid Withdrawn Ship Letter Liverpool, 21 JY 21, 1815" double-circle datestamp on flap, endorsed inside as carried by "pr Eliza" to New York in care of Messgrs. Bourman & Jonston, Canadian red ms. "11½" pence due rating, clean and Very Fine.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

ONE OF LESS THAN 6 RECORDED LIVERPOOL WITHDRAWN SHIP LETTER HANDSTAMPS IN BLACK.

Most examples of the Liverpool Withdrawn Ship Letter handstamps are partial and blurry strikes, unlike examples from London.

1815 (Jul. 21) Liverpool, England to Philadelphia Pa., datelined folded letter with black "Post Paid Withdrawn Ship Letter Liverpool, 21 JY 21, 1815" double-circle datestamp on reverse with red ms. "4/6" double-weight rating, entered mails with reddish brown "PHI 7 SE" cds and matching "9" cent war rating handstamp for ship letter fee (6¢ port of entry plus 50% surcharge), manuscript "Received Philada 7 Sepr. and forwarded by J. Hewes" to Wilmington Del. with red manuscript "12" cent war rating (8¢ for under 40 miles plus 50% surcharge), corner and flap faults, Fine, a very interesting forwarded withdrawn ship letter use.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

THERE ARE 8 RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE PHILADELPHIA CIRCLED "9" HANDSTAMP, THIS BEING A RARE COMBINATION WITH THE WITHDRAWN SHIP LETTER HANDSTAMP IN BLACK.

1820 (Aug. 12) Maine-Et-Loire, France To St. Genevieve, Missouri Territory, datelined folded letter with red "P. 47. P., Angers" postmark endorsed "par Bordeaux", entered U.S. mails with "New-York Jun 26" cds and matching "Ship" handstamp with manuscript "52" rating; light edge wear, F.-V.F.

1824 (Feb. 14) Liverpool, England to Boston Mass., datelined folded letter endorsed "pr Emerald", carried as endorsed departing Liverpool Feb. 20th to Boston arriving Mar. 8th, red Boston "Ship 6" fancy ship due rating handstamp, fresh and Very Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

This sailing was a recorded was carried by sailing ship "Emerald" that was captained by Philip Fox and set a record Transatlantic crossing of just 16 days that stood for many years to follow.

York" at lower left, carried as endorsed by Black Ball Line Florida departing New York Mar. 1st to Liverpool arriving Apr. 4th, framed "Ship Letter / Liverpool" handstamp on flap and manuscript "8" pence ship letter rating, Very Fine.
