1841 (Jan. 23) Baltimore Md. to Glasgow, Scotland, folded cover with red "Baltimore Md. Jan 23" cds and matching "Paid" handstamp with red manuscript prepaid rating to New York, endorsed "p. Sheridan pkt 25 Jany via N York to L'pool", carried as endorsed by Dramatic Line Sheridan departing New York Jan. 25th to Liverpool, bold "Liverpool / Ship Letter" backstamp and "8" pence due rating handstamp, reverse with Glasgow (2.19) framed arrival handstamp; horizontal fold, F.-V.F., a scarce sailing packet use.

1841 (Feb. 7) Philadelphia Pa. to Liverpool, England, folded letter with blue "Philadelphia Pa. Fe 7" cds and matching "Paid" handstamp with red ms. "50" cent rating for 2x 12½¢ inland postage plus 2x 12½¢ freight money letter fee for sailing packet, carried by Blue Swallowtail Line George Washington from New York departing Feb. 8th to Liverpool arriving Mar. 3rd, missent to London where red Mar. 4th cds and matching partial "London / Ship Letter" handstamp struck on reverse, returned to Liverpool with Mar. 4th arrival backstamp, manuscript "8" pence single rating updated to correct "1/4" 1s4d double-weight rating; some edge wear, a Very Fine freight money use.

1841 (May 29) Havana, Cuba to London, England via New York, docketed folded cover endorsed "via N. York" and "p Str Acadia via Halifax", bold strike of "Forwarded by Collomb & Iselin. New York" oval handstamp on flap, carried as endorsed by Cunard Line Acadia from Boston Jun. 16th to Liverpool arriving Jun. 29th, scarce Liverpool "America / L" fancy oval handstamp on backstamp and manuscript "1/-" shilling packet due rating, red London (6.30) arrival backstamp; light horizontal fold, Very Fine.

1841 (Jun. 14) New York N.Y. to London, England, docketed folded cover endorsed "pr Acadia", red "Forwarded from Harnden's, New York" oval backstamp, carried as endorsed by Cunard Line Acadia from Boston Jun. 16th to Liverpool arriving Jun. 29th, scarce Liverpool "America / L" fancy oval handstamp on backstamp and manuscript "1/-" shilling packet due rating, red London (6.30) arrival backstamp, Very Fine.

Lot 500    

1842 (Mar. 11) Buffalo, N.Y. To London, England, blue Mar. 11 oval datestamp with matching fancy "Paid" handstamps and manuscript "25" rating, originally endorsed for Cunard Line Columbia, but carried by Cunard Line Unicorn departing Boston Apr. 2 and mail transferred to the Columbia that returned Apr. 20 by sail, red London (4.21) arrival backstamp and manuscript "1/2" 1s2d due rating on flap; cover toned, Fine and very rare sailing, ex-Pullin.
Estimate    $100 - 150.

"Columbia" arrived at Halifax under canvas, having broken a shaft about 450 miles from Halifax on her Mar. 4 sailing from Liverpool. Her mails were transferred to Cunard auxiliary steamer "Unicorn" who carried them to Boston, this letter caught the return sailing to Halifax where the mails were transferred.

1842 (Sep. 7) New York N.Y. to Cognac, France, bluish green folded letter endorsed "p 'Caledonia' Steamer via Boston", red "Forwarded From Harnden's Boston" oval handstamp, carried as endorsed Cunard Line Caledonia departing Sep. 17th to Liverpool arriving Oct. 7th, London "Packet Letter" framed handstamp with "1/" shilling packet rating, red Calais (10.5) entry cds with "26" decimes due rating, Paris (10.5) and Cognac (10.7) backstamps; light horizontal fold toning, F.-V.F.

1842 (Nov. 15) New York, N.Y. to London, England, datelined folded letter endorsed "Gr. Western" at lower left, carried as endorsed by Great Western Steamship Great Western from New York Nov. 16th to Liverpool arriving Nov. 30th, bold "NO 30 42, Liverpool, Ship" framed backstamp with manuscript "8" pence ship rating, red London (12.1) backstamp, Very Fine.

1843 (Aug. 13) Barbezieux, France To New Orleans, folded cover addressed to False River, Point Coupee, clear Barbezieux cds, 13 Aug, handstamped red boxed "P.P.", Poitiers and Havre transits on reverse, postmarked blue straightline "SHIP" and matching New Orleans cds, Oct 18, with blue manuscript "14½" rate; small facial nick rebacked, still Very Fine.

1843 (Feb. 11) Liverpool, England to New York N.Y., datelined folded letter initially rated "10" pence due but corrected, red framed "Detained for Postage" framed handstamp and then later red "Returned for Postage" framed handstamp with "1/" shilling notation, additional large red "Returned for Postage" handstamp on flap, black "Liverpool MR 1 1840" double-arc backstamp, carried by Cunard Line Columbia departing Mar. 4th to Boston arriving Mar. 20th; light fold at left, Very Fine and scarce.
