AN EXCEPTIONALLY RARE PROOF PLATE BLOCK OF THE $5 BUREAU ISSUE.

This is the only way to obtain a plate block of the $5 Bureau issue, since no examples of the unwatermarked issue are recorded. The Bureau also trimmed away the top selvage on the unwatermarked issue, making this an important positional piece. In addition, only one 1895 watermark issue plate block exists (Cat. $200,000).

1895, 50¢ orange, o.g., never hinged, near perfect centering amid beautifully balanced margins all around, gorgeous deep rich color and exceptionally fresh, Extremely Fine to Superb, the only never hinged example to obtain this lofty grade with only one higher; with 2004, 2005 and 2010 P.S.E. certificates, the later two Graded (XF-Sup 95, SMQ $7,750).
