(Drop Rates) Cincinnati, O. Jul 1, blue cds duplexed with small open grid cancel ties 1¢ blue (63), nat. s.e. at left, on yellow "Ohio & Mississippi R.R., Cincinnati" corner card cover addressed locally to Alphonso Taft, matching large blue "2" cent due rating handstamp indicating the 1¢ underpayment of the new 2¢ carrier fee plus a 1¢ penalty, 1863 docketing at left, Very Fine.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

A CHOICE FIRST DAY OF THE NEW 2¢ DROP LETTER USE.

This cover was mailed on the First Day of the new 2¢ drop letter rate effective July 1st 1863, which included local carrier service if available. This cover was addressed to Alphonso Taft who was U.S. Attorney General under Grant and father of President William Taft, as well as Minister to Austria-Hungary and Russia under Arthur.

May 3d. 1862"; flap partly sealed and reduced slightly at right from opening, Very Fine circular use with a gem pair.
