Baltimore Md. Aug 3, bold strike of blue cds and matching open circular grids tie 1¢ blue (63) vertical pair on cover to local street address at the 2¢ local carrier rate; reduced slightly at right, Very Fine, ex-Knapp; lot label affixed at lower left.

This style of town cancel was used during the period 2/10/1857 to 12/16/1863 (Norona, Type 26, page 230).

Baltimore Md. Mar 10, blue cds ties 1¢ blue (63), wide margins with nat. s.e. at left, and 3¢ rose (65) on blue cover to Philadelphia Pa., prepaid 1¢ carrier fee to the mails plus 3¢ letter rate; 1¢ light pre-use margin crease, F.-V.F.

Charlestown Ms Apr 25 1862, red cds on buff cover to Boston Mass. bearing 1¢ blue (63), straddle s.e. at left, and 3¢ rose (65), tied by circular grid cancels, 1862 receipt docketing on back; 3¢ rounded corner, opening tears at right, Fine and scarce Charlestown carrier use, ex-Johnston.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED CARRIER COVER CHARLESTON.

Charleston was one of the few small towns to have carrier service during the early 1860s. They had only one carrier, Joseph Bryant.

Cleveland O Mar 4, cds on orange buff cover to Ravenna Oh. bearing 1¢ blue (63) and 3¢ rose (65), cancelled by circular grids prepaying the 1¢ carrier fee to the mails plus 3¢ postage, 1863 answer docketing; opened at right, Very Fine, a scarce Cleveland carrier use.

Cleveland O Apr 8, clear strike of cds duplexed with circular grid cancel ties 1¢ blue (63) and 3¢ rose (65) on orange buff cover to Butler Ill., prepaid 1¢ for the carrier fee plus 3¢ postage, original 1863 enclosed letter; reduced slightly at right, 1¢ pulled perf, Very Fine, a scarce Cleveland carrier use.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Cleveland began carrier service in Janauary 1854. As of July 1, 1863, Cleveland had only two Post Office letter carriers and covers with the 1¢ 1861 issue are very scarce.

Holyoke Ms Apr 25 1863, clear cds on cover bearing 1¢ blue (63) and 3¢ rose (65) cancelled by matching circular open grids to Boston Mass. street address, apparently sender tried to prepay the carrier delivery in Boston that was normally paid in cash, Holyoke did not have carrier service; reduced slightly at right, F.-V.F.

New York, N.Y., indistinct cds duplexed with large circular grids tying 1¢ blue (63) vertical strip of four on cover to Boston Mass. for prepayment of the 1¢ carrier fee to-the-mails plus 3¢ per ½ oz. postage, apparently a double-rate letter short paid and marked "Due 6" in manuscript for the 3¢ deficiency plus 3¢ fine, this rule was in effect 7/1/1863 to 5/1/1865., Very Fine; with 1987 P.F. certificate.

New-York City, Paid 1 Ct., red carrier cds ties 1¢ blue (63) on Pierrepont, Stanley & Langdell Attorneys corner card cover to local street address, Very Fine. Skinner-Eno No. PM-CR 11.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

The corner card announces that Judge Pierrepont has resigned to form the new legal firm of Pierrepont, Stanley & Langdell. Edwards Pierrepont was friends with President Grant and would later serve as U.S. Attorney General in 1876-77.
