Flag and Camp with Capitol in Background, red, white and blue patriotic design on cover opened at ends for wrapper use to North Attleboro Ms., bearing 1¢ blue (63) tied by "Cambridgeport Ms. Aug 22 1861" cds, prepaid 1¢ for the transient rate; trivial corner perf crease, Very Fine; signed on back by Ashbrook with his notes.

AN EXCEPTIONALLY EARLY USE ON A RARE PATRIOTIC ENVELOPE USED AS A WRAPPER.

This was mailed only one day after the earliest documented use of August 21st 1861 out of Philadelphia and Pittsburg Pa. This is the earliest documented use from New England.

Sep 24"cds; 3¢ with couple trivial stamp faults, Very Fine and attractive, ex-Morris; with 2000 P.F. certificate.

"Forever" Flag within Shield, red white and blue patriotic design with Harbach & Brother imprint on cover to Philadelphia Pa. bearing 1¢ blue (63), s.e. at left, and 3¢ rose (65), torn, tied by bold "Philadelphia Pa. Jun 19 1862" cds to Manayunk in Philadelphia Pa., clear strike of "U.S. Penny Mail, E, Phila. Pa, Jun 19 5½PM" octagonal carrier datestamp; edge wear, Fine and interesting local use, ex-Bischel, Morris; with 2000 P.F. certificate.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

In 1854, Manayunk and other small towns then outside Philadelphia, but within Philadelphia County, were disbanded and merged into the City of Philadelphia. Nonetheless, Manayunk maintained, to the present, its small town character and separate identity.

General George B. McClellan, multicolor hand painted Magnus patriotic design with framed portrait surrounded by three Zouaves and shield, on cover bearing three 1¢ blue (63) singles, left stamp with s.e. at right, rich color, tied by "Philadelphia Pa. May 1 1862" cds to Hartford Conn.; right stamp with trivial small flaws from edge placement, ex-Walter Senchuk.
Estimate    $3,000 - 4,000.

A MAGNIFICENT AND VERY RARE MAGNUS MCCLELLAN PATRIOTIC COVER.

This Magnus patriotic design features Major General George B. McClellan, who organized the Union Army of the Potomac. In 1864, he was the Democratic Party's candidate for president but was defeated by Abraham Lincoln. The initials "CKW" are written on the shield, presumably by the sender. Charles Magnus (1826-1900) was a print publisher, map dealer, bookseller, and stationer in New York City from 1848 to 1899. During the Civil War, he produced about 700 patriotic envelope designs and about 300 illustrated song sheets, using images of allegorical figures, battle scenes, political cartoons, state emblems, and portraits of prominent men.
