Lot 1771    

(Naval Blockade) Boston Mass Apr 21, red cds on cover bearing 1¢ blue (63) and 3¢ rose (65), neatly arranged at side of cover and tied by two strikes of "Paid" framed cancel addressed to "Henry White, Masters Mate, U.S.A. Steamer Hendric Hudson, Eastern Gulf Blockading Squadron, Key West, Fla.", small multicolor label affixed at center showing design of Cupid, original 1863 enclosure; small stamp flaws, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

The 460 ton steam screw USS "Hendrick Hudson" was built in 1859 as the Florida, a commercial vessel. After being seized in New Orleans by the Confederates in January 1862, she successfully ran the Federal blockade to Cuba with a cargo of cotton and returned with a load of rifles and gunpowder. Captured in New Orleans by a Union expedition in April 1862, she was fitted out as a gunboat and renamed. She served off the Florida coast for the remainder of the war, capturing three Confederate sailing blockade runners.

(Sanitary Fair) Volunteers Refreshment Saloon, Philadelphia foot of Washington St., gray illustrated design on cover bearing 1¢ blue (63) deep rich color, and 3¢ rose (65), both tied by bold "Philadelphia Pa. Apr 21 1862" cds to Union Valley N.Y., prepaid 1¢ for the carrier fee to the mails plus 3¢ postage; barely reduced at right and small edge flaws, Very Fine, ex-Sevenoaks.

(Sanitary Fair) Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon, black overall illustration in black on reverse of cover bearing 1¢ blue (63) and 3¢ rose (65), both tied by "Philadelphia Pa. Feb 28 1863"cds to Shreve Oh., prepaid 1¢ for the carrier fee to the mails and 3¢ domestic postage, ex-Kantor, illustrated as fig. 253.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

The Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon was opened on May 27, 1861 to serve as a rest stop for Union troops passing through Philadelphia. When the Saloon closed four years later, they had served over 315,000 meals and raised close to $58,000 furnishing aid and comfort to Union Soldiers.
