San Francisco View - Ships in Harbor (Baird 238) drawn by W.H. O'Grady from the West, with letter datelined "San Francisco Jany. 29th 1851" and mentions…I send this to Panama in charge of Mr Rathlme who said he would forward it with his letters home, as he is opposed to sending his express by Uncle Sam., writer sends $5 for Plate's (dish's) to be sent back to California to get mail agent to take charge of package or place them in the mail with Uncle Sams stamps on them as the postage on them comes Filthy High - and send in Care of John Short Post Office., the postage stamps mentioned in letter would have the 5¢ and 10¢ 1847 first issue; minor separations, small paper scuff at center of litho., F.-V.F.

View of the Conflagration of Marysville, on the Night of August 30th 1851 (Baird 289) lithographed by Justh, Quirot & Co, published by R.A. Eddy who ran the Stationers Warehouse in Marysville, folded gray double sheet 8.5x17", with letter datelined "Marysville, Cal., April the 24, 1852" with mention of the area mining…The mines are doing well this spring. About $10 [a half ounce] is thought to be the average work of the mines now per day. A man can make more now at $10 per day than he could at $15 when I first came to the country. Provisions and clothes, tools and every thing is so mutch cheeper now.; light minor stains and small hole at center of illustration, F.-V.F.

View of the Levee, Sacramento City, California (Baird 302) published by Forrest & Borden, Sacramento City, wood engraving on a folded blue double sheet 11x18.5", with letter from N.E. Reynolds "Mississippi Bar, Sunday, January 4th 1852" to Miss Emeline Cottrell mentioning camping with a large group of men…I thought when I commenced this morning, I should be able to write well but just as I had written a few lines, a Sailor, a harum-scarum, young, wild, rattle brained, devil of a fellow, stepped out the tent and fired off a very large old fassioned horse pistol. It was heavy loaded and I not knowing it, when he fired it, it startled me some. He did it merely to amuse himself. It took me so sudden that it provoked me, and I gave him a blowing up. I very seldom get mad, but if I do, they know it. One or two others took up on his side, and I gave them all a right-left damning.; wear with reinforced file folds and tears, F.-V.F.

Winter in the Mines (Baird 334) by Hutchings & Rosenfield, 7 wood engravings (6 by Charles Nahl and 3 additionally have the "TA" monogram of artist and engraver Thomas Armstrong.) cover a white ruled double sheet 9.75x15.5" and detail successive winter hardships leading to the death of the miner, his wife and his dog, with letter datelined "Newtown, March the 3 59" from miner and mentions illustration…This is the true representation of miners in the Northern Mines.; reinforced separation at center with other splitting and pinholes, F.-V.F.
