Georgetown, Cal. (El Dorado), address to D.C. Kenney of the Pilot Creek Water and Mining Co. on small leather pouch, franked with 1867, 3¢ red, F. grill, three singles (one mostly chipped off) canceled by target handstamps, F.-V.F., an unusual parcel that likely contained gold.

Greenwood, Cal. (El Dorado), blue rimless arched postmark with manuscript date (ELD-1700) on cover to Haynesville, Me., matching "Paid 6" rate handstamp, with original 1854 enclosure mentioning acquaintance dying from Panama Fever, Very Fine, ex Haas.

Lot 630    

"Grizzly Bear House, Cal, Aug 1st, 1859" (Placer), manuscript postmark on 10¢ green (U16) entire to East Northport Me.; reduced slightly at right, cover tear top left, Fine.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

At this time Grizzly Bear House was a stage coach stop and not a formal post office. The post opened Nov. 1st 1858 and lasted until 1871, when the name changed to Butcher Ranch. Less than half a dozen covers are known from this location (see http://www.examiner.com/article/a-night-at-the-grizzly-bear-house). We have only offered one other cover also from this correspondence, see Sale 41, Lot 263.

La Porte, Cal., Jul 13, 1860 (Sierra), bold cds (SIE-940) tying 1859, 10¢ green, type V on cover to Waterville, N.Y., with "Overland, Via Los Angeles" Four-Horse Stagecoach imprint at upper left; some light cover staining and stamp flaws, Fine, a scarce overland mail cover usage from La Porte.

Los Angeles, Cal., Oct 24 (Los Angeles), clear cds (LOS-5670, R5) with matching "Paid" in oval and manuscript "15" rate alongside, on 1857 cover to Marseilles, France, red "New York, Paid 12, Dec 12" exchange cds, transit and receiving backstamps, Very Fine, a rare foreign destination usage from Los Angeles.

Mammoth, Cal., Dec 30 (Mono), purple cds and target duplex (MON-0760) tying 3¢ Banknote on cover to Pottersville, N.H.; stamp flaw with gum reside around stamp, F.-V.F., one of only three known town handstamps from this early gold town of the eastern Sierra.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

Postal marks from this town's first period are rare and are only recorded between late 1879 and the middle of 1881. This mark is recorded as December 30, 1879. No marks are recorded from the town's second period (1896 - 1898) as the gold was limited and it is believed that no Post Office was established during that period.

Mokulumne Hill, Cal., Apr 17 (Calaveras), cds (CAL-1640) on 1855, 10¢ Nesbitt entire to Peekskill, N.Y., canceled by fancy circle of wedges in oval cancel, Very Fine, a rare fancy cancellation, illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 319), ex Haas.

Mokelumne Hill, Cal. May 2 (Calaveras), bold cds (CAL-1640) on 1864 cover bearing 2¢ black, 3¢ rose, 10¢ green (73, 65, 68), each cancelled by matching ms. "X", red "New York 'Paid 6' May 28" exchange cds, red French entry cds also ties two stamps, La Suze (6.11) arrival backstamp; 10¢ minor corner crease, ex-Tatham; with 2000 P.F. certificate.
