Anthony & Co.'s Northern Express, Paid, sharp full strike of oval frank handstamp on buff envelope to San Francisco, Cal., handed over to the post office with "San Francisco, Cal., Aug 9" cds, Extremely Fine, this is most likely the finest Anthony & Co.'s usage of the three used examples known, ex Dale-Lichtenstein; with 2004 P.F. certificate.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

This express operated between San Francisco, Benicia, Sacramento and the Northern Mines.

Lot 694    

Bamber & Co.'s, Contra Costa Express, Paid., red oval frank handstamp (BAM-101) on 1861, 3¢ pink paste-up entire to San Jose, indicia canceled by "San Jose, Cal., Jul 17, 1863" postal cds; some faint staining at bottom, still Very Fine and very rare, three red handstamp franks are known, one of the three resides in the Wiltsee Collection.

Bamber & Co.'s Express, W.B. Hardy's Office, Oakland, Paid, scroll frank in brown (BAM-003a) on 1864, 3¢ pink entire to La Porte, Cal., with blue" J. Bamber & Co., S.F., Jun 11" cds and blue Wells, Fargo & Co. oval date stamp of the same day; slightly reduced at right, Very Fine, very rare and most likely a unique example of a Bamber frank recorded in a brown color, carried by Bamber from its W. B. Hardy's Office in Oakland to San Francisco and then by Wells Fargo north to La Porte.

Hardy's Office, Oakland, Paid, scroll frank (BAM-004) on fresh 1864, 3¢ pink entire to San Francisco, clear sharp strike of small blue "Bamber & Co., Oakland, Aug 22, 1867" cds blue handstamp (BAM-103), Extremely Fine, it is rare to find such a complete example of the small Oakland handstamp.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Bamber carried from Oakland into the business district of San Francisco. Bamber would normally turn over to Wells Fargo in S.F. but had an arrangement that allowed them to carry into the business district.

Berford & Co./Letter & Package Express/California, red shield handstamp on incoming stampless folded cover to San Francisco, additionally struck with "B & Co. Collect" red two line handstamp, light stain at top, Very Fine, a scarce eastern Berford marking, illustrated in Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 177).

California Penny Post Co., 1855-59, 7¢ black on buff, printed "To The Penny Post Co." frank on buff cover bearing 3¢ dull red (11A), cancelled by manuscript to San Francisco Cal., red "San Jose Cal. Jul 6" cds; cover tear and refolded at top, otherwise Very Fine, scarce as the company only existed for one year.

California Penny Post Co., 1855-59, 7¢ black, frank on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire with "To The Penny Post Co." printed address form and explanatory text on reverse listing nine cities and towns where service was offered, addressed to San Francisco with "Penny Post Co., Stockton" circular handstamp, entered the mails with "Stockton, Cal., Oct 6" cds, manuscript "Postmaster will confer a favor by putting this in the P. Post box" senders directive at bottom left and "Received from the Post Office Box of Dr. Hammond, Oct 10th, Miss Hammond having called at the office of the Penny Post on the 9th & 10th for the same" docketing; cover with backflap expertly reattached, otherwise Very Fine, an interesting usage showing the difficulties the Penny Post had in obtaining letters for clients at the San Francisco Post Office.
