Dec 25" Christmas datestamp; faulty including upper left corner repair, Fine.

Hinckley & Co.'s Express Mail, printed fancy scroll frank with 3-line directive imprint above, on 1860, 3¢ Star Die entire to Cottage Grove, Wis., with "Central Overland California & Pike's Peak Express Co., Denver City K.T., Jun 25" oval date stamp struck over and "voiding" scroll frank on front and second strike on backflap used as a frank, entered the mails with green "St. Joseph, Mo., Jul 2" cds; light central vertical fold, Very Fine, a very rare Hinckley frank used as a remainder after the Central Overland California & Pike's Peak Express Co. bought out Hinckley & Co. on May 11th, 1861.

Hinckley & Co.'s Express, Denver City, December 31, 1860, company date stamp (HIN-100) on fresh 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire with printed scroll frank (HIN-002) and St. Joseph in care directive imprint above, to Osterville, Mass., entered the mails with green "Saint Joseph, Mo., Jan 9" cds canceling; small tear at top and slightly reduced at right, Very Fine, six examples of this frank are recorded all used during the month of December, 1860, Hinckley was using the Western Stage Company during this period and it took nine days transit to arrive in Saint Joseph, Mo.

Lot 844    

Jones & Russell's Pike Peak Express Co., "Free R.B.B." frank, free frank by R.B. Bradford who was the Jones & Russell agent at Denver, on circa 1860 light buff cover addressed to W.B. Waddell, Leavenworth City K.T." and carried along the route; no flap, F.-V.F.
Estimate    $750 - 1,000.

We offered another example of this use with the Jones & Russell datestamp in our sale of the Bauer collection, see sale 52 lot 629 that realized $5,175. In February 1860 Russell, Majors and Waddell (of Pony Express fame) took over the failing Jones & Russell's Express and founded the Central Overland & Pikes Peak Express Co. with the eastern terminal moved to Saint Joseph, Mo. During the Fall of 1859, Waddell, along with partners William H. Russell and Alexander Majors began construction of the Pony Express route from St. Joseph, Missouri to San Francisco Cal. along the central route.
