Boston Postal History, 1767-1800, group of 25 covers with mostly Boston straightline postmarks including many ship rating covers, better includes 1767 manuscript "Bo Sh" folded letter from Barbados to Newport R.I., 1772 with magenta "Boston" straightline to Bristol R.I. with additional partial strike of red Newport straightline, 1787 "Boston" straightline (BPM 86) to Philadelphia, 1794 "Boston" straightline and "Free" handstamp to Samuel Holten, Member of Congress at Philadelphia; 1797 folded letter from Coventry R.I. to Andover Mass. entering mails with partial "Hartford" two-line postmark, ms. "forwd." and "Boston" straightline, etc.; some mixed condition, F.-V.F.

(Missouri) Fort Leavenworth Mo. Sep 16, cds with manuscript day and matching "5" cent rating on 1846 folded letter from soldier in the 4th Regiment at Fort Leavenworth shortly after Gen. Kearney occupied Sante Fe and speaks of getting "…72 cts for every twenty miles coming up to be paid the first payment at Bents Fort…"; some fold separations and minor staining, Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

This letter refers to Bents Fort during Pre-Colorado Territory, which was a celebrated fur trading post built in 1848 by four Bents Brothers. Kit Carson was employed there as a hunter from 1831 to 1842 when he left to join the Fremont Expedition. The post was a real Fort with walls 15 feet high and 4 feet thick.

(New Jersey) "Burltn.", manuscript postmark with matching "2" dwt rating on Jul. 7, 1767 folded letter to William Bayard Esqr. at New York, flap with New York "15 IY" Franklin mark, letter end dated and signed by James Kinsey, some interesting content concerning the stamp act crisis; top edge flaws including small tear affecting postmark, Fine.
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

A WONDERFUL HISTORICAL ITEM, WHICH IS THE EARLIEST RECORDED POSTMARK FROM BURLINGTON, NEW JERSEY.

The name "Lawrence Sweeny" is written near the Franklin mark on the reverse, and may refer to Lawrence Sweeney of New York who was an outspoken Irish American who secretly distributed the Constitutional Courant and was outspoken against the British actions in 1765. William Bayard was a delegate to the Stamp Act Congress, but would later side with the British and have his lands taken.
